How hard is the shot?
« on: March 28, 2009, 07:58:41 AM »
One of the local bowlers who thinks he is great just got back from Vegas, he carries around 249 this year so far at the local house. He did shoot 869 which I give him credit for at this house.

He shot 1778 all events in Vegas, so my question is, How hard is the shot really?

Most of these observations are right, from my experiences. I just got back to Fargo from Vegas---back to a "flizzard" from 70's and watching bikinis all day at the pool  .
 1. Team---fresh oil--8:30P.M.---ANYTHING outside of the far rangemarker---10 board---never got back,or barely touched the head pin. Washouts and 6 or 7 counts on the first ball. Spares were the name of the game. My down fall came from trying to place the ball into the pocket and not let the ball work. Saw one guy two lanes over with good hand start with 267----finished with 180 and 156.
2. Doubles----11:30 P.M.--Deep was the name of the game---started 15 to 8---ended up 19-20 to 8 to keep the ball on the right side of the head pin.
3. Singles---followed four bowlers we were watching in between shots ----all four were playing different lines from straight up the 5 boeard to someone trying to play deep with revs and slow ball speed. Translation: carrydown like I've never seen before. Struggled again with shot placement.
Basically my own fault for not executing. The shot is there and hittable.  Patience is the name of the game.
Hotel: MGM Grand----great rooms with good size bathrooms. No room service was used by any of us,so no comments can be made about it. The buffet wasn't the best in the world. Breakfast was 15.62 with tax. Lunch and dinner was 24 plus. I didn't eat either of those meals there. There is McDonalds in the Walkway---same prices everywhere. Ilardo's pizza isn't too bad. Stay away from the pan crust. It's crunchy and ruins the taste of the toppings. Good size slices. Two makes a good meal.
One of our group who brought his wife went to see Criss angel and Cirque du Soleil. According to him,the show was "fantastic and worth seeing again".
Ball Booths---------------Many shirt deals avilable from all booths.         K&K---Hammer was selling two ball combos for a pretty good price. Hammer ANGER and PSYCHO were together for under 200 if I remember right. There were other comboes available. One of our party bought an Anger and said the service was "top notch and very personable".
Brunswick---good deals on many balls,to include Visiballs in many styles. Good overseas choices available, too. The best thing about the Brunswick booth is the ONLY booth to stay open past about 9 P.M. local time,so they're making a killing with later business.
Storm--seemed really busy. Good reason is that I saw MANY MANY Virtual Gravities being thrown,as well as Cells of all three makes. Good, quick service there.
Visionary---seemed busy as well. Resurfacing deal of 20 for one ball was advertised. Immortal pearls were on sale at 159.
Gift shop at Cashman Center was good in that I ordered a shirt and had my name put on the back and they had it ready the next day. Taxis are expensive--23 from the airport to MGM. Rent a car or ride the Deuce as the city bus is called----$ 3.00 per day---good for 24 hours.
Subway---one of our group mistakenly got a sub from one of the shops there on the Strip---$14--you read that right---for a normal $ 5.00 sub.
Overall a great experience. I'm personally not happy with the way I bowled, and have things to work on. I'll never blame the lanes. As I said, the shot is there. Just use patience.

I agree with alot of what has been said. I'd be careful labelling someone shooting 1700 as needing work though.

For the record, there is a minus symbol in front of the 1700.  Anything in the 1600s, then something was up...injury, spare shooting, lack of practice, etc..

Out of curiosity, who in the NIBA or GCABA is averaging 249?

What I would have done different was stick with my plan.  I tried playing outside for doubles and shot 150, 162. I move back inside and shot 216.  Had I stayed inside and continued to move left, I would have shot 1800.

To be honest, how can someone get better on National oil patterns if they never see these type of conditions?  Up until the last two years, I never had any local houses lay down a National's shot so people could practice on it.  About 9-10 years ago I joined a summer league with tough conditions. That year I shot 1800+ in Nationals.  They didn't offer it the next year, plus it was 40+ miles away. On house conditions I can't really play deep because I don't have the Rev's.

It was funny to watch some of these guys bowl who were used to the house bumper bowling. They swing the ball out and watch it go in the channel. They turn around and scratch their head wondering what the heck just happened.

While walking into the Cashman for the first time, I overheard these guys talking about how the condition was so unfair and not playable. Saying it was a waste of money and they would not be back next year.  I guess this is what the Wall of China house shots have done to people. They want to come in and shoot their 700+ with no skill or effort.

another300, I'm a believer that if you have good mechanics, you should find a line on any oil pattern.  If you can't access at PBAX league/sport shot league, hopefully you can find a good coach.  Proper execution goes a long way.

i just got back and had an enjoyable time, what i saw was softer backends, spare shooting especially single pins was much much easier this year, but strikes were a premium, i left 4 1-2-4-10s but converted 3 of 4

didnt shoot big but was over 1700 for the first time in ages  i played roughly 15-10 the whole time other then when i moved deep for singles the last game and saw a great look going 20-8 at the arrows
