Arsenal for USBC
« on: March 08, 2007, 04:37:04 PM »
I bought a Black Widow in anticipation of the trip.  Essentially drilled with the #1, skid/flip layout, OOB.  I was originally going to bring the surface down to about 1000 (I'm a medium revs, higher speed kind of bowler).  I've had good success with this type of drilling/cover prep in the past.  However, after reading initial reports, and learning I will be on fresh oil for Team and S/D, I'm thinking about a Special Agent, with more of an even rolling layout.

No new ball

BW (1000)
Shock Trauma (even rolling drill, dull)
Thing Returns
Spare ball

New Ball

Special Agent (even arc drill)
BW (4000, Skid/Flip drill)
Thing Returns
Spare

I MAY have the option of a 5th ball depending on what my brother and dad bring.

Opinions?

And I know it's the bowler, not the ball,  but having the right ball in your hand can get you a whole lot further.

Other PMs sent and check this link, too.

Russell (the artist formerly know as Jabroni) liked his Widow's reaction, too.

I used the black widow for the majority of the tournament, thought it rolled great at 4000 grit.  Also most of my team used it for most games as well.

I will be carrying my arsenal of Lane #1 balls with a couple of Storm hook monsters to burn my line in practice!!

Lane #1 Black Cherry Bomb, H20, Cobalt Pearl, Tsunami (unless I sell it b4 then) and my newest weapon, my new G-Force..  Not even drilled yet!!!

Storm Trifecta and Fire Diablo sanded to 320 grit..  like a sponge!!!  Soak up that oil!!!

Getting a couple new balls drilled in the next few weeks, so dependent on their reaction, this is tentatively what I'm going with in Reno:

Paradigm Passion sanded
G Force dulled less than the Passion
Awesome Revs probably box surface
World Class Reactive bit polished
Hornet or Thunderstruck Pearl
Spare Tire spare ball

The Awesome Revs and Hornet are the new additions, so if they fit where I believe they will this will be the arsenal.  Loading up a bit heavier on hooking balls, as I know there will be a fair amount of oil for team.  Have to check my squad time for S/D, if it's the squad right before a team squad, I may go with a bit less surface on one of the other balls to help in S/D.

I thought they were alternating Team and D/S events so that all teams were fresh oil and all D/S were second shift.  Was I told wrong?  If the lanes dry out much DanH78, you won't have much to fall back on.  The Thing Returns is still a pretty strong ball unless you're speed dominant.

I'll probably only take 4 balls.  Too much trouble to ship or carry more than that if you're flying.

Weapon of Mass Bias: 800 grit
Tour Power: 1000 grit
?
XXXL: 3000 grit polished

I'll need something for light oil as the lanes break down, but I have no idea what will be good.  On these types of patterns, I usually hate all of my pearls.  I can never seem to find a consistent break point.  A little slow and it's through the face.  A little firm or mis hit at the release and it's a wash out or 2-10 combo.  Even on light oil, I seem to need a solid to control the amount of energy used.  I don't have anything like that, but hate to buy something new.  A lot of the lower end solids are still more than I want.  Maybe I'll finally get that Blue/Green Centaur.  Now I just need to find a shop I trust to drill it.

We had a practice session on the pattern and it played pretty dry.  I know different lane type, different oil..., but it was something to to get an idea of the pattern's properties.  It played pretty good near the track area if your "A" game was stroking it with good speed and a fairly strong ball.  Otherwise, 3rd-4th arrow with some swing seemed like a better bet.  Forward roll to help read the pattern looked a lot better than a lot of axis rotation.

Yup. We're bowling minors (new name for Singles & Doubles) at 11:30 AM. That's the 3rd S&D shift, with the first starting around 7 AM (insane!), BUT all other S&D squads are after team events. So I figure lane breakdown should be the same.

I forget; do you have your pearls drilled to flip, like pin above the ring finger or bridge area? That could provoke that reaction. Most pearls are designed flippy; so often it is safest to drill them as you'd drill your solid or strong balls: pin at or just below the ring finger. A lot depends on your PAP; your PAP seems safe for either of those options.

An excellent choice; also mine. I already sent mine and 3 other balls to my hotel.

There are other solids that will serve the purpose of a resin pearl: that is, light oil balls. Also there are light oil particle pearls, like the RG Venus. It has a 1% particle load over the basic Mercury. It is a great light  to medium-light oil ball. (Also sent to Reno already.)

Some old and current solid resins for lighter oil:
RG Saturn (polished), Storm Razor Wire (polished), Columbia Super Trooper, Ebonite Black Ice, Hammer Burgundy Pure Hammer.

Most people seem to be saying that the fresh oil plays like real oil, requiring a dull solid or particle ball.

I just got back Friday. If your lefthanded, not starting anything, it doesn't matter what's in the bag. I used my Special Agent in team. I bowled great shot 687. Of course 29 out of 30 clean. I opened in the 3rd frame of the 2nd game. Anyways I seem to always score better in S/D, so I was really pumped about that score. We bowled 11:40 minors. They were TIGHTER than team event!!! Tried finding some friction and there was none to be had. I had 540 in doubles and 575 in singles for an 1802 AE. The lefty we had with us was piping a Black Widow up 7, but he had some in and some recovery to the left, he had 1939 for AE. I had a stroker that played a fall back of the 4th arrow with a Total NV shoot 1920 AE. We were the only ones to shoot over out of the 2 teams we had bowling. We were on 11 and 12 for team and 69,70,71 and 72 for S/D, don't know if that makes a difference or not. Some think it does.........

Practiced on the pattern yesterday. I know it wasnt exact, but gave me an idea. I got a nice look early with a No Mercy although, I'll probably adjust the surface a little before I go. Later I was able to bank a Red Zone off of the track I had created. So those 2 for sure along with a Rampage and havent decided on a 4th yet. Either a Radical , but I'm not too confident with it or I've been leaning towards a Toxic to fit in between my Red Zone and Rampage. I tend to use the Rampage for right side spares also. Two weeks from today WOOHOO!

No Mercy
Red Zone
Rampage
Radical or Toxic

Well, I received a sign today.  I walked in the pro shop, there was Special Agent on the shelf with nice specs....and it was on sale.

So it will be

Special Agent, Pin under ring cg kicked out, 800
BW, drilling #1, 4000
Thing Returns, 4x4 pin high, polished
Spare ball

I'm comfortable that if I don't score well it will be due to lack of execution, not because I don't have a ball for the condition.

I really don't want to work this week, Wednesday seems SO far away
