Ball shipping (Holy Cwap!!!!)
« on: April 11, 2008, 11:02:08 AM »
I just got the credit card bill for shipping 4 ball from NJ to Albuquerque
and 6 balls (2 + 4) balls back from ABQ to NJ:
$160.00!!

Hmmm? If I ever go again, I will take check-in 4 balls to the airline and do the same on the return trip. $160 is too much extra, unless you win an Eagle or if you earn $100K+ per year!

but, Joe, it is a MAJOR hassle to ship them as baggage and to wheel them PLUS your 3-5 days of clothing through long and crowded airports. Plus the luggage handlers have a tendency to mistreat the ball bags and that damamge is not covered by airline insurance.

That's part of the difference between DHL and UPS.
Other problems are
- some hotels will not let you ship heavy items like balls to yourself as a guest. Some will; I did that last year.
- finding where the local DHL shipping point is once you're in the Nationals city/town, in order to ship the balls back to yourself. Insuring there's time to drive there (if it's not local) between the time when you lest bowl and when your flight leaves for home.

I think that the shipping prices are getting too high, but your only other choice is to check your bowling bags in on your flight.

Check with your airlines first as many have just dropped their allowed limits.

Delta, Continental, US Airways, and NorthWest only allow one free checked in bag of 50 lbs.

American and Southwest allow two free checked in bags of 50 lbs each.

United as of May 5th will only allow one checked bag.  It cost me $49 to Albuquerque and $46 back to CA.  I shipped 4 balls and it was well worth it to not have to lug them through the airport. Just my opinion.

Find a way to ship to your hotel.
Its not going to get any cheaper or easier in the future.
With the new restrictions going in place.

I Fed EXed 4 balls and a 4 ball bag to my hotel in Alb.  Then shipped it back to illinois for 100.00.  If your shipping to your hotel you may want to call to see if they have a service charge.  Some do some dont.  Just to be sure.

just my opinion

I just returned from ABQ travelling on Northwest Airlines.  I checked four balls in two bags as luggage and carried my clothes onboard in a carryon bag for free.  Come May of this year Northwest will only allow one bag of 50 pounds as baggage.  The second bag will cost you 25 bucks but this is still fairly reasonable based on shipping costs with the likes of DHL/FEDEX/UPS.  I believe this to be the case with most of the carriers today since what one does the other follows….

How were the flights to ABQ on NWA?  On time?
I'm flying out next week and will use your idea for my equipment

I see the pro's and con's of taking them on your airline flight or shipping them through UPS/DHL/FEDEX. I'm sure each bases their cost on weight and size/shape of the parcel. Does anyone know off hand how the airlines handle your checked bag or equipment if it is damaged?

I bowl with a teammate that "worked" at NWA and he had some stories of how they handle the luggage when a flight gets in.  I can now understand why the handles and wheels on those type of bags don't last long when you check them. Balls are hard and durable, but I'm sure they can encounter or develop damage if/when the bag is dropped.

I've always used totes with pretty good success. This last time, the seams on both bags started to rip out so that means 2 new totes for me . This could have been normal wear and tear or mistreatment, I don't know, but I could have used the $60.00 toward something else .

I guess to get back to the topic of this post, the airlines now charge $25.00 for bags over 50 lbs. It sounds like they will start only allowing one free checked bag with a charge to the 2nd. If it's $25.00 per extra bag, that's $50.00 round trip per extra bag. When that happens, is that comparable to the cost you encountered this year with shipping 4 balls out and shipping 6 balls back?

Thanks for those who have posted. Everyone has different approaches. I'm participating in a tournament in Portland, Oregon next year with my kids and am looking at the options of getting our equipment there.

Dan, we were on a direct NWA flight to ABQ with no problems at all.  Between the two of us, we check four bags that all arrived with no problems or damage.  My bags consisted of the older Storm hard case two ball / garment bag and the second bag was the three ball Vise tournament bag.  I only had two balls in the Vise bag and used the third area for miscellaneous stuff I thought I would need, ie; towels, ball cleaner, etc.  I had no concerns with the Storm hard case bag but was worried about the Vise bag.  But as I stated, both arrived with no problems or damage.  The other two bags my partner had were the Storm four ball roller that he shipped as two pieces.  The handle he merely tied down with strapping.  Both of those arrived okay as well.  As I stated in my earlier email, we both had hand carry luggage consisting of our clothing.  Regarding NWA and the change in May, I’m told that if you have purchased your ticket prior to May of 2008 you will still be allowed two checked bags for free.  Each bag must be less than 50 pounds….
