East coasters angry
« on: June 07, 2007, 07:55:04 AM »
I couldn't help to hear a conversation from a couple of Baltimore based bowlers on the plane yesterday.  They were upset that the USBC tournament isn't visiting the east coast anytime soon.  They were tired of having to fly across the country and not were not looking forward to doing it again for the next upcoming tournaments.  I do agree that the USBC needs to look into rotating locations.  The usual reasoning however is because the USBC can't get commitments, e.g. Wichita, and Vegas and Reno have easier setups.  As a St. Louisan going either east or west will probably cost me the same the amount anyways but I do agree something may need done. The last time the tournament visited the east coast was 1999 in Syracuse.  Hopefully in 2011 the USBC can make a change.

As far as I know, cities make bids to host, not the other way around.  USBC goes to a place that is willing to pay them the money they want and meet all the other demands from the USBC.  If no east coast city is willing to do that, tough luck for people out east.

Exactly.  The USBC has to take what they get.  If they receive 5 bids from 5 western cities, why should they refuse all those and go hunting for an eastern city?

Maybe some of the "angry east coasters" need to petition their cities to get them to host the event.

I know for a fact that Syracuse has bid on a number of the tournaments since 1999.

I'm not saying it's wrong, but USBC will always take the town that offers the most blood money. They really don't give a damn about the bowlers, I think that's obvious.

Why not go to your local association and have them write letters on behalf of all the bowlers? Or get a petition passed around, collect signatures, then have the associations mail them in? 1 strong written letter with signatures on a petition will be WAY more effective than 150 poorly written letters with no back up.

well it does take the local associations work to get this done.  my first tournament was in syracuse, about a 4 hour drive for me, and i hated that city..i actually like traveling to some of these places because their cities i wouldnt normally go to.  granted i would like it to be next store to me ie: foxwoods or mohegan casino just to be able to go watch more bowlers but it may not ever happen. just my thoughts

My understanding is that San Antonio has put in a pretty good bid for 2011.

It was just in Knoxville, TN in 2003.  I live in NJ and drove there.  It wasn't that bad.

I am sure it is hard for the USBC to find an arena or location that is willing to give up all their events for 5 months so that a bowling tournament can be hosted.
