Time for another What's Working? thread

OK, what ball/surface/layouts seem to be working with what lines?
Let's hear from both sides along with a mention of your style.

I've read here that the Cell, at 1000 Abralon, seems to be a hot ball on the right side. What about the left side, and what layouts are being used?

Also what of the side events?  BTM, Bowlers Journal?

I can only give you a right side perspective, but I can give you multiple thoughts on it...

I used a box Cell for team and singles---doubles hooked too much. Team I played 18-14 and singles I progressively moved in---starting at 18-11, then banking left and ending at 26-14 on one lane and 24-14 on the other. If you ask the ball to do too much (as with any situation) it will burn up. It just seemed to read the transition better than anything else out there.

I throw obviously NOTHUMB. More specifically, inverted track, above average ball speed and above average rev-rate (maybe not as much as you'd think).

I had 2 other teammates using box finish Cells. Both are way above average ball speed and way above average revs. They both rely on creating more tilt than I do to score. One kept the ball going forward throughout the team event, then when the shot broke down he could open it up a little bit---while still throwing it his normal speed. If he threw the ball outside of 12---it missed the headpin---in all 3 events.

The other could get in, and keep the ball in. So instead he tried to fight the shot out to the right, playing 9 or 10 at the arrows. If he split his mark perfectly, he could hit the pocket---and might carry. If he missed a board out, he missed the pocket. When he missed a board in, he was high. Typical Nationals---expecially when you play them wrong. If he would have played where the other guy did, keeping the ball going up the lane on the fresh and softly bumping left he would have been ok.

One more Cell I saw was drilled for length---and was polished (why you would drill this ball for this purpose is beyond me). His Cell made it out of the bag for team, struggled and went back in the bag. It wasnt enough in to carry and wouldnt hook enough out. Poor surface prep, and poor drilling choice made this ball pointless.

I saw a Columbia Resurgence in action with a guy who has shot 5 straight 1800s going into this year. This ball hit like...well fill in your deroggatory (sp?) term. He would go weak 10, light 7 all night---if he moved at all, he was high. Had a terrible look. It hooked too much for doubles and not enough for our singles pair. Lets just say I wasnt impressed.

I threw a Resurence for all 3 events and had a very decent look. I used a 5" pinout with pin 4.25" from my PAP (at about 1:30). Righthanded, 370rpm, 18.5mph at release, 45deg rotation and quite a bit of tilt (but not a spinbiscuit - yet). Surface was box 1000 for team, and then 4000 for minors. I started about 15 (arrows) to 12 (break) in team and finished around 18-13, although I gave up some carry with the inside breakpoint (231-200-192, last game flag-10 in 10th that cost me some brackets). Doubles were hooking and I had to start much deeper than where I left off, even with reduced surface, and shot 180-204-204 with my usual big4 start. Singles I probably did have much too much surface and just tried to control the pocket from deep, finishing the 9th game crossing 24 to 9 at 45 feet. My breakpoint for games 7 and 8 migrated out from 11 to 10 as they opened up. I shot 203-202-212, which I might have been satisfied with had I not gone 29 clean with a 5-7 in the last ball(!). I'll have to wait until I get the video to see what happened there, because it felt good off my hand. I thought I threw about 100 pins better in singles than I scored, but my 1828 gave me an average 2.5x multiplier in senior brackets in all 3 events. Honestly the Resurgence was fine, but I could have used polish for singles.

Actually, I threw this ball for a reason. When I got to Albuquerque I went straight to the Ebonite booth to visit with Jacki and Cal, asking them what they thought was scoring. (If they haven't seen you bowl, its a good idea to bring a laptop with some video clips). Cal worked with me for 2 hours adjusting my finger pitches, and I came out with a Resurgence and Blue Dot with clear my hand better than my old gear. In retrospect, I should have had my other gear finger-plugged and adjusted, but I didn't think the change warranted it. I ended up using these 2 balls for 9 games.

If you have enough ball speed to control the pocket and a confident spare game, it seems pretty easy to stay 570+, which from what I saw gives you a positive cash flow in the brackets. Consequently, if getting something punched up at the Ebonite booth increases your score at all, that money is recoverable. I'd probably recommend against grip changes at the tournament unless your hand hurts like mine did.

Side events - the BJ was oily even for me. I used the Resurgence at 4000. I bowled one doubles set (about -50) and went across the street for the BTM. In contrast to the BJ, the BTM was dead hooking. The air conditioning was busted and as we moved to the end of the house the scores dropped dramatically. Even though they had fans going, it must have been in the 90's inside and it became increasingly difficult for me to clear the thumb at the required ball speed. Not a pretty set, and in retrospect, I'll never bowl again if I even suspect the A/C isn't working.

NOTHUMB, it may be that our team-mate just didn't have a good matchup with his Resurgance. I saw Ron Hickland (ball designer for Ebonite, Hammer, Columbia, Track) shoot a couple 220s in doubles with a Resurgance. He is a lefty and I don't know what layout or surface he was using.

We both witnessed a guy doing well in doubles and singles with a Cell. His partner was doing quite well also using a Rapid Fire. Both were around 4th arrow in doubles and deeper in singles.

Thanks guys, for the information.

I've heard you need to bowl the BTM first set and the BJ late because of the amounts of oil used for both patterns.

Anybody else with ball, surface, layout and laneplay reports?

We're going to be on lanes 31-32 for team and down between 5-8 for S/D.

Don't listen to dr300, he is a spin-biscuit.  You had that 5-7 coming.
