Which balls should I take?
« on: April 10, 2007, 03:47:50 AM »
Here's what I have to chose from (all 15lb, see profile for stats):

Brunswick Fury (pin under, 4" x 3 1/2", box finish)
Hammer Black Widow (pin over, 4 3/4" x 4", 2000 abralon)
Ebonite Total NV (Pin over, 5 1/2" x 3 1/2", box finish)
Brunswick Original Inferno (pin over, 4 3/4" x 4, 2000 polish)
Storm T-Road Pearl (pin under, 5 1/4" x 4 1/4", box finish)

I need to choose 4.  Any suggestions?  Obviously I will take the Fury for the fresh, but the other 4 are up for grabs.  Any advice from those that have been there would be appreciated.

I'd take the Fury, the Black Widow, the Total NV and the T-road Pearl. That would be a balanced lineup with the Fury for fresh/heavy, the Black Widow for medium to heavy, and the TNV and T-road for singles and doubles, or for when the lanes are starting to break down.

Fury (Obvious choice)
Black Widow (Just look at my average with it, and I suck! LOL )
Original Inferno (good ball)
T-Road Pearl (for when the lanes go to crap)

You can take the Total NV to the local dump or donate it to your local bowling center

I figured that would be the response.  All it really comes down to is whether I want to take the Inferno or the Total NV.  I haven't had a chance to match the two up with one another yet, so we'll see after a couple practices.

Personally, my style and ball roll match up better with symetrical weight blocks.  I tend to get a hook/stop reaction with complicated asym. cores.  But, I'll try them in practice side by side to make the decision.  Any more insight is always appreciated fellas.  Thanks!

I agree w/ Necromancer - Fury, Black Widow, Original Inferno, T-Road Pearl. When all else fails I've done quite well playing a variety of lines w/ Inferno. Worked good at BJ's last year too. I also generally prefer symmetrical cores.

Well, I got back from Reno today.  For what its worth, I went with the Fury, Black Widow, Inferno, and T-Road Pearl.

In team event, we had WAY more hook that it looked like we would.  I used the Black Widow for about 24 frames, and then switched to the Inferno for the last part of the last game (I left a 5-7-10 in game 3 - yike).  I went 226-204-187 with an open 10th the last game.

In doubles, we had way LESS hook than we thought we would (obviously, we didn't plan this out well).  I threw my Black Widow in game one, and had no opens and no doubles, one 8/ for 198.  I switched to the Fury and went left some and had a whole new world, and shot 267 game two.  The third game I went dutch for the first 5 frames, then wrapped a 10 and spared it, then left a flat 8-10 to blow clean 30.  198-267-184 for 649.

The single set was stupid, because the pair we moved to was not used in the team event so we basically got fresh oil for the singles event.  I made good shots the whole time for the most part using the Fury and went 203 with an error and 216 clean.  Then I started the third game XXX/XX.  Things are looking good, then I pitch one and 2-4-8-10, then I 2-8-10, and then another split in the 9th.  I shot 187.

My best nationals so far, but nothing special, and couldn't finish a set.  But I banked some money in brackets and lost some at the Pai-Gow tables.

All in all a good trip.

Solid bowling out there JJ.  From what I've heard carry is tough out there and you made the best of it.  Sounds like you made some good choices with equipment, another difficult thing for people traveling to nationals.  A final note, it takes a big man to post that he left a 5-7-10 at the Stadium.

Thanks for not taking that P.O.S. also known as the Total NV.  You have done the bowling world and BR.com very proud.

In other news, I am excited to see what idiots bring that ball to the Pittsburgh City tournament this coming Sunday.  I can't wait to laugh.

Whether or not the TNV is a POS, a lot of people sure are buying it!

I think there were like 6 of them on the same rack; and honestly from what I have seen, it's not THAT great of a ball.

Exactly!  I have bought into that Ebonite hype years ago only to find out I was screwed.  I have only liked a handful of balls they ever created.  The Total NV to me is just a marketing gimmick that has a lot of bowlers buying it expecting it to be the best thing to ever hit the lanes.  I can't wait to see it in everyone's hands this Sunday.

The saddest part was that there were A LOT of Total NVs out there.  In the minor events it was a decent ball to use, with the easy length and good backend for most people.  One of my teammates was trying to throw one in the team event and that didn't work out so hot.

If I had to do it over, I would have just switched to my Inferno to start game 3 of team, start doubles with my Fury and then switch my Black Widow in game 3, and same in singles.

I hope the rest of you at least get a chance to bowl on the busted open patterns in doubles AND singles.  Last year it worked out that way too, we got a fresh pair for the singles event.  Its hard to put up big numbers that way.
