Balls for Nationals
« on: February 16, 2009, 03:38:08 AM »
How many and what kind of balls are you taking to nationals.  Also has anyone ever taken balls as a carry-on, any problems with this in the airports?  I have to fly the morning that i bowl so i want to carry on two of my balls jsut as a precaution in case the airline loses my checked baggage.  Me I am taking 4.

Storm Dimension
Hammer Black Widow
Storm T-Road Pearl
Ebonite Maxim (Spare)
I feel like i should have a good range with these balls, this is my first year to nationals so any other advise would be much appreciated.

I'm going to use the "Bowling Ball Express" again, since I'm taking 4 (NVD, Big Block Diesel, Razor Wire,& spare ball)...I have carried on balls in the past with no troubles, but one thing the USBC has done right is this "BBE" program. From where I am (Cleveland), probably will cost about $120 to ship both ways.
I watched in horror at the Reno Airport about 10 years ago, when a baggage handler was chucking bowling bags onto the ground. From that point on, I swore I would never "check" my bowling equipment again. I'd rather pay the $$ to UPS them than risk having a $150-$200 ball get ruined.

Do you think that it would be worth it to put a handlw with care sign on the bag since i will carry on two balls and have to check two.  I'm sure they wouldnt care much, i wish there were a way to carry all of mine with me i dont trust the baggage handleing as far as i can throw them, but financially i have to check two of mine, its good to know that i will at least get my two primary balls with me as a carry on though.  My main concern is my checked ones making it there period cuz ive lost baggage in the past and i fly in 930 in the morning and bowl the team event later that night.  Have to keep my fingers crossed.

How long to do you have to allow to make sure your balls get there in time to bowl without paying the 2-3 day expediting charge?

i flew southwest this summer and me and my buddy both carried on two and checked in 3, we but old towels and bubble wrap to help protect them and the airport will but fragile sticker on them if requested, you should have no problems

You could put fragile on the side of your bag. I think that is french for "throw on the ground as hard as you can"!

I am flying Southwest this year. I will check 2 of the 3 ball Storm travel bags and carry my suitcase on.

With those prices, it would seem much better to pay the upcharge to check the bags.

That depends on distance and what shipping company you use.  I use the shipping charts supplied by either UPS or FedEx for their ground shipping times and add a day or two.  I find FedEx Ground cheaper generally. Most hotels accept shipments for guests, and with FedEx, you can also have something shipped to a Kinko's near the hotel for pick up at no additional charge.
