Couple of questions???

I'm bowling July 10th & llth, late squads both days.

Can I use a grey pad while practicing, to scuff polished balls? (I don't think I can?)

The use of sandpaper to open thumbs holes?
Can it be used in the lane area?

I'm not shipping back the balls I'm using.
Where can I leave them?

I don't think you can alter the surface once you have checked your balls in.

I'm sure you could use a rasp, file, or sandpaper to open a thumb hole. But I would try to get that done before I get out on the lanes.

I don't know about leaving balls. They will not want them at the convention center. I would go to a local house and leave them.

What balls are you going to leave?  If it's anything I want, I could probably arrange for you to leave them with Kent Wagner.  Otherwise, you could ask the guys in the booths if they wanted them, or dump them off at a local house I suppose

I shipped a Hammer Sauce, and a Lame 1 Nebula (my fav ball).
I'll probably ask the "booth workers"...I'm sure someone will take them.

why would you not be able to alter the surface during practice. you changing the surface of the ball and not the weight dynamics of it. when you check in your stuff it is to just make sure that the static weight is correct. you can alter surfaces of your equipment until practice has ended. it is no different than any other tournament. you can work on your thumb hole as many times as you want during competition. watch the pba us open and any of those tournaments, they are changing surfaces all up until the match begins

Duke, once you go through the scale room and weight in your balls you may NOT alter the surface of those balls. Anything you do must be done prior to you weighing them in. As far as sand paper for thumbs is usually ok, just don't try and touch the surface of the ball.

I was pretty sure that you couldn't alter the surface...don't know why, you can't?
As long as it is before the 1st ball of competition.

Rules are different than any other USBC sanctioned tournament, I guess?

I will be bowling team at 230 on the 10th, you are bowling the 830?

I know the dates, only know the times are late...
I'm flying in on the 9th, leaving the 13th...bowling the late squads on the 10th and 11th...

The rule states no alterations on bowling balls after they have been checked through the scales.  

Now what exactly that means is something I can't answer.  I know you can't use anything on the surface of the ball during bowling except for a clean, dry towel.  I don't know if you are allowed to work on the thumb hole.  I would ask when you get there before you check the ball in at the scales.

Duke,  late times are:

Team 8:30pm.  Singles/Doubles - if you bowl 8:30pm team, you usually get assigned one of the following: 11:40am, 5:30pm, or 11:30pm.  So, if you are sure it is the late squad, then probably 11:30pm.

The only thing I can think of on the surface adjustment is that they require you to have the entire surface adjusted to the same grit. So they don't want someone sanding just the track.

Sometimes when you alter the surface it will punch softer on the durometer as well. So if you were borderline you might make it go under.

I don't see why it is a big deal. If you know you want the surface adjusted while in the squad room you would know it before you go thru the scales.

Just do it before you check your balls thru.

ALTERING THE SURFACE OF BOWLING BALLS AT THE USBCs IS AGAINST THE RULES ONCE THEY'VE BEEN CHECKED THROUGH THE BALL LINE.
