Going this week-end.What to take?
« on: June 17, 2003, 02:02:07 AM »
I will be bowling in the tournament this week end and I am getting mixed views from the people here and was wondering what to take.I throw 14 to 15 mph with a high track (1/2 inch from thumb hole) with medium revs (average 208). I have a good selection of ebonite, storm and roto-grip and brunswick.Any opinions on what I should take with me and the best line for striking from someone who has been there.

Thanks Bob.
I do feel comfortable going up and in around the 5 board. Is a v2 particle or morich collosus too strong for that line with my speed or do you think a v2 sanded with light polish or a roto grip silver streak is strong enough? Also is there aneed for something as weak as a v2 pearl or storm trauma drilled straight up? We bowl on normally very dry so this will be quite an experience for me. Thanks for your help anyway.

Last week when I was out there no one was playing outside. At least no one that I saw on my squads or any that I watched. What worked for me was just the opposite of Bob. My best shot was with balls driled with long pins, over the bridge to be more specific and either strong or with the Cg towards the PAP slightly. Both of the balls I had the best luck with were polished with BlackMagic. In team I had the best shot with my Trimax III (stronger of the two) and also to start doubles, then switched to my Eraser for singles. Shot 1810 and had a 155 my second game of doubles due to not moving deeper quick enough and having a bad pair that was launching the ball on any right side spares airborne a couple inches. I should have made better shots, but allowed the bad seam to affect my mental game for that one game anyway. Outside of that game my low was 183 and split the last three frames of that game on the left lane and a 188, the other games were 190,197,199,231,233,&234. I think that the lanes have changed some since early in the tournament due to wear and the weather. I would carry a good mic and use what little time they give you in team to test a couple areas, but don't be afraid to make a big move. Even if that move is inside of the 5th or 6th arrow. My 19 year old that went with me, for his first nationals, was plus the second day playing deep as well.

leebowl,
I was beginning to think nobody else was going to be bowling in Knoxville this weekend, which is when I'll be there, as well.  I bowl team on Saturday at 2:30 and D/S on Sunday at 7:00 AM, so I'll be bowling on fresh for team and doubles.

I have been reading everyone's advice as well as listening to the guys I bowl with at home and work with at the shop (a group of them are currently leading team all events).  I have also had a chance to practice and play on the ABC oil pattern, such as it was with different oil and lane surfaces.  Anyway, everything Bob has said seems to be true for me, as well.  I think my go to balls for this tournament will be my Inferno in box condition, my Charcoal Executioner, also in box condition, my Deuce which has been scuffed back to box condition, and of course, my trusty White Dot, which I'll be needing to make all those spares I leave.    The Deuce and Charcoal Executioner have worked for me up the boards from the outside and the Inferno has worked for me from further in.  I'll also have my X-Factor and Trauma in case they get toasty, although I don't see them getting very toasty for us, since we bowl team and doubles on fresh, and follow only ourselves in singles.

Bowl well and good luck to you.  Perhaps we'll run into each other while we're there.

Lee, long pin drills on pearl equipment for inside and either your V2 particle or sanded on the edge. I would have different surfaces on each with your speed like 1000 and 1500 go wet-sand or slight polish for gutter. For me in the middle something you can get real long will be good, ball strength almost moot. Getting to the proper breakpoint and making the transitions to hold it at that point will be key. On the leftside the gutter was more forgiving for me. Actually the 6 board, outside pushed a bit farther but after a game 4-6 was ok with the proper break point being key. Don't be afraid to try the Storm challenge. Good shot. I didn't post up big numbers, but like most, spares are the real name of the game. Good luck.
 Calhouns on the River has great ribs, and Rafferties was good also. If your looking to relax call the Tennesee School for Massage Therapy and ask if they have any openings for massages. Total massage for $20/hr. Knoxville was a cool place and much better than the past few years. Shot is tough but isn't it always.

Rick;
I'll see you up there on Saturday. My team is also bowling at 2:30 on lanes 45 and 46 I think.I forgot to mention that I am left handed but I have heard the shot is equally difficult on either side. Sounds like I need to bring my Inferno as well. Has anyone tried an eliminator there?
Lefty Hi-trak thanks for the info on the massages and the ribs. I think I'll give them a try if I can. My d/s are 11:30 on Sunday. This will be my first ever Nationals so I appreciate any and all information I can get. Thanks everyone.

Lee,
My squad organizer told me what lanes we would be on and I promptly forgot - d'oh!

See you in Knoxville.

If you happen to come across Corky's Bar-B-Que while you're lost in Knoxville, check it out.....they have some fine groceries there.  Corky's started out in Memphis, and has since branched out to several other areas of the Mid-South (including Knoxville).

You've got me hungry just talking about Corky's!
