Got to bowl the Sweeper last night at Nationals in Albuquerque
« on: February 12, 2008, 06:48:12 PM »
Well, I got to bowl the sweepers last night at the USBC @ the convention center in Albuquerque.
I got to bowl the 6:30pm and 9:00pm squads.  First off I bowled with Deb on the 6:30pm squad , we were assigned lanes 1-2.  Started out in practice throwing a Big/R-Bang , Black Pearl and a Conquerer .  The lanes were a little slick for the polished reactive resin and pearl particle(both pin above drillings),  I had a pretty good look with the Conquerer so I started with it(pin below drilling).  I wound up shooting outside the 5 board as there was a heavy volume of oil inside that, proceeded to shot 257 first game.  Second game got a little loosey goosey with the arm swing and finally wound up tossing 199 for 456 after two games.  The last game decided to switch to my World Class Particle(pin below drilling sanded with 500 grit abralon then lightly polished).  I picked up the ball speed a little and proceeded to shoot 214 for a 670 series.  Wound up cashing 8th for this squad and won 6 brackets for a total of $225.00.
For the 9:00pm squad got to bowl with Deb again, this time on lanes 27-28.  I started out practicing with the World Class Particle and Conquerer and decided to stick with the World Class Particle due to a little more volume outside the 5 board.    First game I had trouble getting the ball to turn the corner and was leaving a lot of 2 pins from coming in light and wound up shooting 185(missed a couple of easy spares along the way).   Second game I moved a couple of boards left and the lanes seemed to open up a little bit more after the first few frames.  I wound up throwing the last 6 strikes for a 246.  The 3rd game started with the front 5 strikes before leaving a 10-pin, a couple of errant shots and finished with a 232 for a 663 series.  Wound up cashing 12th for this squad and won 4 brackets for a total of$180.00 and a Grand Total of $405.00, not bad for a $100.00 investment.
Overall I think they are going to stick with the latter oiling pattern from what I heard from a few of the USBC staff.  I think the condition was fair for both sides as some of the better left-handers and right-handers were around the 650-680 series range with only a couple of 700’s shot.  Also, I didn’t hear too many people complaining about the patterns that were presented to us today to bowl on.
I hope this info is helpful to all that get a chance to read this……………

Nice bowling as per usual, Pat. Nice money grab, too!

Wow! if you can use the World Class and coming up light!, maybe I can bring my Yeah Baby! or NS2 and finally get some good use out of it/them. I can hardly imagine using either of those balls playing the first arrow.

Pat, Nice report and good bowling.  So do you think compared to last year the pattern is similar ?  or tighter?

Also is the USBC going to allow the outside to be playable ?

Nice bowling Pat. Congrats on the profit.

First beers on Pat when we get to Albuqueque, lol. Well maybe not.

Did you throw any inside during practice? Or see anyone playing inside? Just wondering what the shot was like crossing around 15. I always hear about people being able to play up 5, or up 3, but every year I get to nationals, you couldn't bring back a sandpaper ball from out there, lol.

Jeff,

Thanks!  I did see some guys throwing a lot of Lane Masters stuff and some of the guys with more hand then myself could get Black Pearls and World Class Reactives back from the ditch.

Thanks Robb!

The only thing better than the bowling was seeing all the goodies at the Lane Masters booth they had set-up(had to wipe the drool from the corners of my mouth a couple of times). It's the 1st shop as you walk in.

Jorge300,

In addition to this report,  I posted my experience during the sunday practice sessions, follow this link: http://www.ballreviews.com/Forum/Replies.asp?TopicID=188405&ForumID=79&CategoryID=5

I did notice some guys throwing inside around 10 board and around 15 board, but they were not having as much success as the guys who moved all the way out.

Also, in this post at the end(last paragraph), there was mention that the 9:00pm squad pattern may be the one they settle on.

I bowled it as well, but without success.  I bowled on 19-20 at the 9:00 squad.  I hadnt bowled in nearly 2 months and it showed in my first two games.  I wasnt putting anything on the ball, and was lost.  I think I shot 158-169.  I was watching the others on my pair, and was trying to line up with one in particular and wasnt working.  He was standing on 10, playing the ditch, and just floating it right back into the pocket.  I think he shot 650-660.  I finally moved left, and played inside.  Standing on 30, trying to lay it down right of the middle arrown, pushing it out to near 5, and just watching it come back to the pocket.  I was throwing my Rival.  Of course I had to keep the timing just right and lots of lift.  I ended up shooting 214.

If anything came out of this sweeper, it was that I learned what to look for and what to bring if I get on a team.

Do you know if the shot you were bowling on is the same as for the tournament

If it wasnt it had to be very close.  I thing the shot was just a little bit more open than years past.  It was hard to me to judge for the reason that bowling hasnt been on my mind for the last 2 months.  I moved out here from Wichita, Kansas for a new job and just now getting back into bowling.

Timing was key because if you were fast, you were going to be light.  If you were slow, you were high.  I think there was some area, but I believe timing was more key.

Centers, you said you had some success playing inside?  Where did you play?  Are you a cranker with lots of rev's?  Where is your normal THS line? I have been reading that there pretty much is a shot playing different lines.  I guess I am just looking at what appears to be the best line to play.

Dale,

Read the last paragraph of the original post.

I'm heading down to the convention center today around noon and I will see what I can find out about which of the patterns they are going to go with.  Like a said in this post and a previous one, I got to bowl on 5 different lay-outs they put out and they were all succeptable to some high scores(and low of course).

I'll report out later if I find anything out today.  Gotta go hit up the Vendors before all the good stuff is gone.

Hope this helps,
