Anyone know the 7am S/D squad, is that fresh or left over from the previous nite squad?? Thanks

Tomorrow I leave for Nationals. I will give a report when I get back. If anyone is there this weekend I am bowling 230pm Team on the 3rd and 7am S/D on the 4th..

7am is the first shift of the day and has fresh oil. Nice shot and only 4 bowlers per pair 2 hr 20 min time limit for 6 games. If you can handle the heavy oil you'll like it. Shot will be close to what you see at the start of the team event before all of the carry down comes into play.

While it is "fresh"....it's not laid down in the morning.  I was told while I was out there that the lanes are oiled at night and are left to sit till morning.  Now this could be wrong but it's what I was told.

Goof1073, that is very interesting. thanks for the info. i have the 7am d/s squad as well, later on this month.

Minnesota Don, did you have that squad for d/s too? if so,what did you use during that squad, and how did you play them?

thanks in advance.

They should play tighter than team event.
Mainly because of the lack of lineage on them to break them down.
Also with no practice on them except for the 2 balls per lane that you are allowed.

If it doesn't come from Team Utah.
Just leave it in the car or at home.

I played the early squad...here are my thoughts:

Yes, it's the fresh. Now...did they play like Team? Not at all.

Out of the gates, I had an awesome look. Two practice shots on each lane, got lined up standing 18, looking 15, out to around 9-10. Go 8 spare, six in a row, and then...

TRANSITION.

#@)&$! There goes the look. The backends got tight (they were way cleaner than Team -- I've heard from some folks this is because they double strip at night)...and I made some poor choices along the way, plus missed a few spares I shouldn't have. Looking back, I kinda got carried away striking so much early, and missed out on what could have been a more successful minors if I had only made sure to really stay on top of the oil breakdown.

All in all, I still would have much rather bowled the night before. My team was scheduled to bowl the late D/S squad...my partner decided to get food poisoning. Everyone else got to bowl late (on a broken down lane which would seem to have really matched up well with my game), but I had to wait and bowl on the fresh...so sad ...

Since the 11:30 D/S isn't done till about 2:00AM they probably don't get done stripping/running the lanes till about 3:00 AM.

So they sit about 4 hours.

thanks bass, revTrex, & Pinbuster for your info.
sounds like it could be a very interesting set. looks like i will be throwing some surface the. i can get the ball to read sooner, and play more of a roll, and not too long down lane.

They are double stripped prior to oiling for the 7 am squad.Which will make the backends stronger than the start of team. So depending on your lane reading abilities they might seem drier because of a stronger move of the pattern.Just keep in mind they will also tame down and make them seem oilier. You may need to actually move right before you begin to move left.

For what it's worth playing in early on the fresh is not the best idea.  Our group watched a bunch of different people play on fresh and the best look developed when folks played out around 7/8 with surface to not only break down the shot but to control the change in direction down-lane.  In teams it took practice and about 7-8 frames for the lanes to transition enough to move in a bit and utilize the partial bump created.  Playing out also made for a perceived amount of hold too.  The main issue is that the hold was out and when you moved in there was a good amount of hook that make folks move in even more and push oil into their break point / out to the right.

Our team went to the practice session where they are holding the Journal and this was the advice that we were given.  We worked the lanes and saw the shot develop, but poor execution hurt us in the end.  We did bowl next to Derek Eoff's team and the other Nebraska team and that's basically what they did as well.  This is the reason you see the scores increase over the course of 3 games for the better teams.

Now on a fresh pattern for doubles / singles it's probably a different story and the lanes definately aren't going to break down as fast.  To me bowling that squad is a disadvantage unless you really like the fresh.
