How confident are you going into this years?
« on: February 25, 2008, 01:17:46 PM »
On a scale of 1-10 how much confidence are you taking into this year's tournament and why?

I would say I'm about at a 7, due to shooting just under 650 in singles in Reno last year, and for the first time, I feel like I've been getting in some legitimate work on Nationals type patterns.  After bowling on, and struggling on T o C, World Championships, Shark, and the other PBA patterns, I feel like I have a solid idea of what lines will have a serious shot in team event.  I may take a look at the gutter, but more than likely, I'll be deep inside, keeping it close to the pocket, or medium deep inside, keeping the breakpoint inside of about 13 or so.......much easier said than done, of course.  Much thanks to Dave Wodka for putting out these great patterns to work on in our PBA league......putting the challenge back in the sport!!!

I'd have to say I'm about a 9.  Fortunate enough to have a ton of people offering support and advice, and I'm listening to all I can get.  Rick Benoit lives in town, and every time he's here I get something new to work on.  Bob Benoit lives here year around, I see him two or three times a week, and I always learn something from him as well.  My pro shop guy has been about the best source of suggestions though.  Rick helps me the most with mechanics, which have improved a million percent in the last few months, Bob talks a lot about hand positions and ways to control the ball, but my pro shop guy talks more about laneplay strategy.  Not so much about moving or angles, but about different theories, different ways of attacking situations that a typical league bowler would definitely not think of.

There was a nice shot in Reno, and I've heard Albuquerque is even easier, so I'm definitely going in with all the confidence in the world, I can't wait for it to get here.  The last few times I've bowled on a PBA pattern or something else tough, I've averaged 225+, and I've been putting up huge scores in league, so I'm ready for it!  As a side note, the pattern for this year was ran a couple weeks ago, and for 4 games I shot 960, but I don't really think it was the true pattern, not enough oil outside.  I had a pretty good line throwing straight up 6.  Had to throw it slow, but there was a nice shot.  Can't wait!

I'm probably up to about a 2 right now.  Since bowling only in one center for the last 22 years, I have lost a lot of my ability to adjust.  When I lived in Detroit area, I used to bowl at multiple houses each week.

Just recently joined the local PBA Experience league so my confidence took a jump up to 2 after hitting 600s the last two attempts.    Unfortunately, I have only seen two patterns so far.

IDK, I haven't even thought about it.  I bowled pretty well in CC two years ago.  I bowled the BTM for the first time last year and shot 822.  I figured that was a good tune up for the Nats pattern.  Hitting the pocket in Reno wasn't a problem, carrying was.  If I can get a good look, then I'll probably do well.

I don't plan on bowling on the pattern prior to the tournament.  I've found that gives me false expectations of the pattern.  I'll just toss one up 5-10-15 to see what is out there.

I hope to make good shots and let the chips fall where they may.

I am about a 9 right now.  I know for a fact that I have no clue how I am going to do or where I am going to end up playing the lanes.  Oh yeah and I leave Thursday to bowl Friday and Saturday this week.

Good luck phoneman!  Let us know how you do.

I am more confident that in years past (a 7 out of 10).  My teammates and I have been bowling together in the nationals for a four years now and we have some plans to practice on the pattern together to see how the shot breaks down...we had our best showing last year in Reno (almost shot 3000 scratch) and both my team and our companion team cashed and bowled well.  Time will tell but I have to wait until June for the real deal!

Thanks Paul,

I have been rolling the rock very well for the last few months and feeling pretty good about my game right now so if I can find the shot I feel pretty confident that if I can find a good line I can score well.

I will give an update on Monday.

Probably an 8. Just a little more experience each time I go, and more chances to bowl on tougher shots. I will find out April 18 & 19th...

About a month ago I was probably a 9, was bowling really well, made match play in PBA regional, plus bowled well last year in Reno.

Now, I'm at about a 6 or 7, not throwing the ball well right now and not matching up well in my scratch league. But luckily I have until June to work everything out. I think I'll be at an 8 or 9 by the time it's time to actually go.

Mine has gotten pretty low in recent years probably a 5.

No matter how well I'm throwing/scoring before I go the shot slaps me down.

6 tops, until i get there and roll a few practice shots that is the best i can say, I am throwing the ball well right now but nationals tends to bring the worst out.  I do have the burn shot figured and that is most of my battle, hoping to really shoot better then i have this year

I was a 9 or 10 going in...my timing had felt great for the couple of weeks before and I felt like everything was clicking.  I got there and left my timing in Atlanta...I missed 6 single pins and shot two sub 150 games.

This was the most confident I had been...and I had my worst year so far.

Russell, got your coat handy.....

Sorry to hear that you bowled bad, regardless of our ideological differences, I would never want a fellow bowler to not do well.  If I may, where were you trying to play? Always like to get as much info as I can before I go, and see what worked and didn't work for people.

Best idea?  Get there a day ahead of time and stay there the whole day.  Watch transition, watch who is playing where with what.  By the time you get out to bowl, you should have your shot all ready to go.

I think I played them wrong in team event ON TOP OF poor shot execution.  I think the shot is to play something rolly in the track (5-7).  I tried to play much further out (up 2/3) and got myself caught with absolutely NO tug area.  I had to throw perfect shots to get it to the pocket.  I shot 60something in team with two missed single pins.  I don't think they are very tough in team...I just gave a lot away.

In singles and doubles it will really be a crapshoot this year.  I think the oil they are using moves more than anything I have ever seen in my life.  If I found a look it would be completely GONE in 4 frames.  I was moving 14-16 boards with my feet on each pair.  On the doubles pair our left lane hooked 12-14 boards more than the right lane (kind of hard to figure that out in 2 shots...lol).

I don't think they are overly difficult....just have to stay on top of the moves and make quality shots.  The scores are out there to be had.....

Good luck to all!
