Carrying Balls onto Plane
« on: May 19, 2005, 03:28:06 PM »
Has anyone tried to carry on a ball or two as part of their carry on luggage?  I guess this post is short notice since I'm leaving tomorrow, but has anyone had any problems trying to do this?
Thanks

When I went to Reno for the AIAA conference, I carried a one-ball bag with my Mutant in it.  The security people took the ball out and poked at it with their scanning machine but I didn't get any real hassle about taking it on the plane.  I put it in the overhead compartment with no trouble.  Possibly a two-ball tote wouldn't fit in the compartment (or it'd be too heavy), but the one-ball was fine.

Thanks for the input so far everybody!

I'm traveling on AirTran airlines out of Midway in Chicago...here's what they have to say about carry-ons

quote:

Carry On
No carry-on item may exceed overall dimensions of 55 inches (length + width + height). All carry-on items must fit under the seat or in the overhead bin. Any heavy item must be placed underneath the customer's seat. Any item with inflexible surfaces must be placed underneath the customer's seat or flat on the floor of an overhead bin.

Knives or sharp objects will not be allowed in carry-on baggage or past the security checkpoint. Any sharp items you may need in your travels should be packed in your checked baggage. Customers dependent upon syringe-injected medications may carry on such items.

Specific items prohibited from carry-on baggage due to security restrictions include: knives of any length, cutting instruments (any kind) including carpet knives, box cutters and folding or retractable blades regardless of blade length or composition. Ice picks, scissors and knitting needles are also prohibited. Straight razors are prohibited, but disposable razors, e.g., Gillette or Bic, are allowed

It sounds like they wouldn't have a problem with it, but I just wanted to hear if anyone else had any experiences like this...Thanks Again!

I learned that carrying bowling balls (mostly because of their density, not their actual weight) is specifically not permitted in general. As is the case for many, many regulations, the actual personnel who check your luggage in, both carryon and check-in, are not aware of every tiny regulation. So, you can sometimes get away with ball(s) as carry-on, but don't count on it. Besides, If something happens to the carry-on overhead bin or its lock or it closes but does not lock, DO YOU WANT TO BE THE ONE SITTING DIRECTLY BELOW YOUR BALL WHEN IT COMES FLYING OUT??

The last time I tried to carry on a double tote (the Team Columbia bags fit nicely under the seat), I was told I couldn't because they could be used as a weapon. Of course I replied, "You are assuming I could hit something with these".

I ended up having to check them , but at least I got a good laugh out of the stoneface TSA person.

I just tried it last weekend when going form Dallas to New Orleans for our TCBA Tourny and it was no go.. They x-rayed the balls 2 times and since the cores are dense and could not be seen, they made me go back and check the tote bag at the ticket counter. It was a HUGE pain in the butt.

I would not even try it unless you want to waste 30 minutes of time..

If they only made a ball that would carry that da_n 7 pin (and I am right handed!!)
