ksucat request
« on: February 28, 2004, 06:42:38 AM »
KSUCAT wanted me to post my results along with my experience at this years tournament.  Team event was very difficult.  I used a Crunch by Track.  Ball reaction seemed like it was on a flatter pattern.  If I did not loop it, the ball read the lane too quickly and went through the beak, but if I looped it a little too much, the ball never made the corner.  I just fought to keep the ball in play and made spares.  I made $500 in brackets with my 569 in team event.  HOWEVER, day 2 rolled around and much different story.  I remembered how the lanes changed from team event and where I was playing at the end of game 3.  So, I took a Green Gargoyle and played 20 at the arrows bumping around 10 to shoot 723 in Doubles.  Switched lanes for singles.  The Gargoyle was a little too much.  SO I switched to the Dry Heat. YES!  You read this correctly.  I used a Dry Heat in singles to shoot 684.  I ended up at 1976 all events.  I sit about 6th in singles.  My team, "And Those Twins" was among the top 10 in team event and second in team all events.  YES....I know it is still early, but it is hard not to get excited seeing my name among the leaders.  I know TENPINSPRO will be happy to know that I used a Dry Heat for my singles event and was successful.  I think I was more surprised at how well the middle of the lane held up during my singles event considering there was 6,7,8 games bowled since the last running of the oil machines.  The surfaces I used were:  CRUNCH....gray scotchbrite with Clean and Smooth, GARGOYLE....600 sanded with X-Tra Shine, and DRY HEAT....gray scotchbrite with Clean and Sheen.

My experience with the hotel sucked.  I stayed at the Fitzgerald in a suite.  What happened was not the hotel's fault.  Some genius construction worker decided to hit our main pipe out front.  So, we had no water all day on Saturday and was not able to take a hot shower until Sunday night.  SO.....30 degrees, light rain all weekend, and no hot water.  GOOD TIMES!!!!  As far as dining was concerned, Tivoli Gardens, at the Eldorado, was not too bad.  Food was decent and the prices were affordable.  They have everything from French Toast to Steak.

One more thing.....I flew into Sacramento instead of Reno.  Tickets from Atlanta to Reno were around $400, WITH a layover whether it was in Phoenix, Dallas, or Denver.  I few NONSTOP to Sacramento for only $250.  It is a 130 mile drive between Reno and Sac-town, but WELL WORTH IT.  The scenery through the mountains was awesome!!!  LOTS of snow, but the roads were very, very good.

I hope this is what KSUCAT wanted me to do as I was more than happy to post this.  If you have any more questions, feel free to leave me a message.  For those going out there in the not too distant future, GOOD LUCK.  I look forward to hearing your results as well.

Tivoli Gardens is nice, and their coffee is AWESOME.

GREAT bowling, Twohand!!

If you don't knock them all down with the first ball, that's no reason to leave any after the second ball.

Thank you for the excellent report.  I know I want to hear about all the experiences from those who already have gone.  Sorry to hear about the water, cold showers don't do much to make you feel clean and ready to go.

Again, those were some good scores you posted.  You should feel proud.

Thanks, KSU.  I am very proud of my scores.  My previous high was 1960 back a few years ago.  I did not want to come home.  I wish everyone else out there the best.

Most of the better team scores are being shot on the low end of the stadium. Doubles and singles are not as bad but still the scoring pace is lower on the high end. The PBA players on our pair stated that in the two tournaments they had bowled there this year that the low end had always scored better.

We bowled them on 49 and 50. The shot was brutal.

We had 2 PBA touring pro’s on our pair (They were just under the limit for tournaments last year and could still compete), plus a coach from Wichita State. One had just missed the show at the last PBA world championships. They said it was the toughest fresh shot they had faced all year. Nothing on the PBA would compare.

Our teams tried every line on the lanes and could find no place were you could generate any room. The lanes played very slick.

The best lines we finally came up with was to play fairly deep and not get the ball very far right of the pocket. But you had to make perfect shots. A board right missed the head pin. A board left was at best a crossover.

The PBA pros averaged less than 190 for this event. One team shot low 2800 the other 2700.

I had 15 splits or washouts and ended up throwing the worse set I have bowled in 20 years.

Doubles and singles we bowled on the low end. We started on lanes 7 and 8 and moved to 5 and 6. The shot was much easier than the ending shot in team. I still had carry issues but could find the pocket regularly and left make able spares. I had a teammate buy a new storm xxx. He had a large amount of area in Doubles and pretty good in singles. He shot around 680 in doubles and this doubles team is currently inside the top 40.

I almost had a clean 30 in singles. I got to the 10 frame of the last game and left a 3-6-9-10. Thought I had picked it up but left a wiggling 9 pin. Still only shot 598 with just that one open.

I left solid 7-8-9's as well as 10’s. I just didn’t seem to match up very well for the carry.

Doubles and singles we all played between 15 and 19 for both sets. I had very little area outside but the one teammate could miss out by a couple boards and could get it back.

As far as brackets go, we have a pretty strong squad with lots of good bowlers. In the team event one guy shot a low 600 and got $700 back on $400 in. In doubles and singles one bowler had $240 in singles shot 689 and got $240 back. Another shot 640 and got $250 back on $400 in.
