2008 Nationals - Doubles&Singles
« on: February 21, 2008, 03:11:39 AM »
Watching the squad before me, it appeared there was a little more oil on the lanes than during the team event.  It also appeared the lanes had opened up a bit.
Started doubles with my Resurgence.  After our 2 practice balls on each lane, it appeared the 7 board at the arrows, swinging no further than the 5 board and at about 9 board at the 45' hash mark was going to be a good line for me.
Started out with a double.  The left lane appeared to be hooking a little more than the right.  Went light on the right lane, left 7 pin.  I went thru the nose on the left lane. The heads were pretty touchy.  I just couldn't seem to line myself up after the double.  I carried a few light hits on the left lane but couldn't hit on the right lane.  I threw maybe 5 good shots that game, ended with 192.  Still playing 7 board at arrows on right lane, tried playing 10 board at arrows out to 6-7 and 9 board at 45' on right lane.  I threw a few good shots but then it seemed my ball was bitting the lane too early and taking off thru the nose again.  I shot 202 that game.  Start of the 3rd game, I threw harder but ball would mis break point and would sail and not make it back to the pocket.  Moved deeper to 11-12 at arrows but ball would still bite too early, tried even deeper to 15 but same thing.  Ended with 159.

Started Singles with Apogee at 11 board at arrows and 10 board at 45' hash mark.  Made 6-7 good shots for a 209.  Same line to start off the 2nd game but the heads began getting touchy.  I started throwing harder to get thru the heads but it was causing me to swing a little further or tug it a bit. Moved a bit deeper to about 16 board at arrows toward the end of the 2nd game, ended with 164.  I seemed to have found something playing the deeper line, I threw 6-7 good shots.  I had a 4 bagger then I starting to mis my mark or throwing too fast or too slow.  I chopped the 6 off the 10 twice and ended the game with 197 for 570 in singles.

If I had to say what the best line and ball combo for me would be, i would have to say a pearl ball to help get thru the heads but have some bite in the back end playing 16 board at arrows out to 10 board at 45' hash mark.
Of coarse I would have to work on my accuracy, consistency.  Hopefully I will do better next year.

Hope this helps some of you!

Mvas,
Did you try anything even deeper at the arrows during practice? Just curious if you saw too much length in deeper, or it was jumping, etc. Also, did you try anything further right, straight up 2-3 board, or swinging 3-1 (according to the graph the 1 board has no oil on it {yea right})?

If you bowl on a pattern laid down by one of the Kegel Sanction machines, Santion +, Ion, or the new Lanewalker, there will never be oil on the 1 board.  Oil is laid down like an ink jet printer back and forth down the lane from 2 board to 2 board, and everything in between.

So yes, in theory on every pattern put down by a Kegel Santion machine you can have a board to hook from on the gutter.  Good luck to those that can play out there on a heavier volume, i.e. Nationals this year.

Just like the Cheetah pattern, almost, lol. Risk vs. Reward I guess.

There's a huge difference between the Cheetah and Nationals this year (aside from the 5ft. difference.)  Cheetah has lower volume on 1,2, AND 3 board.  3 boards of hook on the gutter instead of 1.

Nationals is basically flat and pretty heavy outside of 5/6 where Cheetah only oils on 2 and 3 for a few feet allowing for the bump on the ditch.

(Of course this year they've changed Cheetah and added a little more oil on the outside taking away that bump, but this is used as an example.)

Here's last year's pattern and this year:
http://www.kegel.net/patternlibrary/default.asp
http://www.kegel.net/patternlibrary/default.asp

Take note outside of 10 and see how different the patterns are.  Last year there was more recovery if you got it wide while still being pretty flat inside with hook left (IIRC). And there was a little more hook outside for those that wanted to square up to 5.

This year, like every year, you're going to have several people try to play the ditch and only 1 in 10 are going to have a look. The usual "fake" shot on the gutter.

Good read on no oil on the 1 board though.  If you can get your body to play up 2 with a swing to 1, by all means whack Nationals.  But if not, I'd look for something a little farther inside.

I'm not very comfortable playing deeper than 18 but I did try going over 20 at arrows with resurgence(during practice) and it also bit a little too early.  I don't have enough hook to carry 10 pins when I get in too deep.

During team, I did try going up 5 out to about 3 but it bit too soon so I gave up on that.  During double/singles, I did try playing 5,6 out to about 3,4.  My resurgence never made it to the pocket, hit the 3 pin. I tried twice with same result.  I was afraid to play any further right because I didn't want to dump it in the channel.
My team mate two lanes over during doubles was playing 4,5 at arrows out to about 2,1.  Second game he had the first 7. Although, two of them went brooklyn.  He shot 691 in doubles(268 high game) but only shot 555 in singles.

Oops...Sorry everyone

Didn't check if they came up or not.

Go to USBC Tournaments 6 down. Open both the 2008 and '07 Championships patterns in different windows and compare them side by side.
