nationals lane oil pattern?

just have a couple questions. im making my first trip to nationals this year in reno, we are bowling the weekend of june 12th, 13th and 14th. my question is do they use the same pattern every year or do they adjust it on a year to year basis? also do they let you know in advance what the pattern is? my home center will put out what ever i need to practice so i was thinking of getting them to put it out for us, we have 3 teams from our local association so we would want to practice some before we go to get a general idea of the pattern. andy info would be appreciated, thanks!

They change it every year, and they post the pattern on the website.

They do adjust it year to year, and the upcoming pattern probably wont be available until the first part of Feb. ( at least that has been the past scenario for USBC)

thanks guys, like i said this is my first trip, and im really looking forward to it plus i want to have a decent showing too. any of you guys bowled at the national bowling stadium? i heard of the left side bias out there, what lane surface do they have in there, and what can i expect in general as far as lane play and house tendencies?

They upgraded to Brunswick Pro Anvilane a couple of years back. Even though this is the hardest surface in bowling right now, it is permanent vs the new installs they use in the convention centers i.e. a little more surface friction than the early weeks of the USBC's at non-Stadium venues.

I only hear the "left side bias" stories, but have never researched the numbers to make any valid arguments about it or lack of it. The PBA has had several Leftys win there over the years so that is probably where the "myth" has originated.

Good luck and enjoy. USBC's are awesome as they treat you like rock stars at the tournament and the vendors. If you get the urge to work on your game, Mike Jasnau at Lane 81 is one of the best in the business. You will not be disappointed!

To answer your question.  Yes they adjust the pattern every year.  Yes they publish the pattern right at the start of the tournament.  yes your center can put out the pattern for you to practice on.  i will warn you.  It will play different then what you practice on.  too many variables between your house and Reno.  Size, temp, altitude, oil machines, type of lanes, age of lanes.  If you put the pattern out at your home center be prepared to play differently at Reno.  Especially for minors since they are not on fresh and depending on the teams before you the way the lanes break down will be different.

thanks phoneman, and yeah i just want to get a feel for volume and length more than anything. i know theres alot of variables involved between my home center and there. looking forward to the experience, and im hoping i have a decent showing. im gonna approach it with an open mind and see where i go from there.

I second a lesson recommendation with Mike Jasnau. I did it-well worth the money. Professional,yet he never makes you feel like he's talking down to you---he doesn't.
 It's hard changing so many years of muscle memory,but the practice is beginning to pay off. And you get a DVD of your lesson to go back to for refreshers when you need it.

While the venders treat you well don't expect to be treated well by the people running the tourney. They treat you like sub-humans,no food,nothing but water to drink,don't even look at anyone in the stands,don't go to the bathroom. The guys that weigh your balls in are as rude as they come. I had a ball pass on sat and had too much side weight on Sun.(not) I weighed on 2 different scales before I left home.The guy wanted to drill a hole in it rt then and I said no. He had the balls to come out to check and see if I was using the ball in the tourney. His scale was off but he wouldn't admit that it was his problem.

They just treat you like dirt!!!! Now the other Nationals I have been to have not been like that,just Reno.

We did the team lesson last year.  I liked it, and was able to find a good reaction on the pattern there.  I did find that the convention center was way slicker than the practice session.  I had a ball that I really like the look of on the fresh and something that I figured it would work once they broke down.  Both ended up being not enough at the convention center as they were quite a bit slicker as I had expected.

The lesson is good to get a feel for the pattern but don't think what you see in the lesson is what you'll get in the real thing.

I don't see the necessity for the lesson unless you are extremely new to sport conditions.  Just go watch the bowlers scoring well, that will let you know where the shot is.  The hard part is getting 10 guys on the same pair to break them down right.

See the highlighted portion of your post...hence the reason for the team lesson. To teach your 10 bowlers how to break down the lanes together. And to do so in an area that gives you the best chance to raise your scores.

Okay, I can agree with that.  I assumed MOST of us would take a team that would try to play the same area on the lane.  

I heard in 2008(NM) he was teaching playing outside 10.  I tried that and had absolutely nothing.  It was flag the headpin right or square up more and go brooklyn.  I bowled well starting around 16 to 11 and working my way left.
