We are bowling May 8-9 and are considering a day trip to get a quick peek at Yosemite. Anyone have any tips for routes, possible weather problems, etc.?
Or is this just too much to try to accomplish in 1 day?

Nice trip but it will take your entire day. Might want to plan on a day before you are not bowling. Watch out for "Sam"!

It would take you about 3.5 hours to drive south on 395 to Mono Lake, then another 0.5 hours west on 120 to Yosemite. Would definitely be a long, all-day trip. But if you do, it would be worth it. Yosemite at its eastern border is very scenic. However, if you want to see Yosemite valley it would take you at least another two hours to get there (four more hours round-trip).

Very long day trip. Would say you would need as many as 3 days to relly see the park, also call ahead and make sure all parts of the park are open that time of year. Some parts are closed in winter.

Although there's a good 30 days difference between May and April. My dad tried to drive through Yosemite from CA on his way back to the midwest in mid to late April last spring, and found the roads still snowed in. You might still hit some weather.

I did the reno thing a few years back and drove the one hour to lake tahoe went out a guided fishign trip on lake tahoe, price $60 for 1/2 day included license and lunch. we were allowed to keep trout too but I gave mine to a hungry looking old man. absolutley fantastic scenery super fun and relaxing.

Bill,
The trip from Reno to the upper gate at Mono lake is a drive. It also takes a fair amount of time to get down to the valley. The view is tremendous. If you''ve never been to the valley, its worth the trip. leave reno very early in the morning if you''re going to make a round trip in the same day. Rooms in the valley are very difficult to get and rather expensive. If you go, park at least once at the Yosemite Lodge and walk across the street to the base of the water falls. Its about a 5 minute walk and breath taking. Stop in at the lodge and they can give you travel trips for driving for a great scenic route.

Thanks to all for the info. Now I have to decide whether to do it this year or wait until next year when I could perhaps take a couple of days to see Yosemite.

Why go all the way to Yosemite when you have Tahoe, Donner Pass, Desolation Wilderness, etc, all within a couple of hours???
