Jeff,

I would definitely agree with you and there should be some discussion about including yourself on the ballot.

Jeff could they have added them to the ballot, or was the ballot full. Like in other sports, only a certain amount of people can be on the ballot to the hall. Because those were some huge names on the ballot and I can somewhat understand if they were left off, but if they could have added more names, then I feel they should be on the ballot.

Getting Jeff and the likes on the ballot with PBA stars isn't going to help.  USBC needs to change the rules to give some of these guys a chance by having a separate category.

Bill has it right. We don't belong in the same category with the PBA Tour stars -- that would diminish what they have accomplished at the pinnacle of the sport. But a USBC Hall of Fame should have a USBC category!

And ballot is limited to 6. And voters are only allowed to vote for 3 -- it's why a guy like Holman didn't get in on the first ballot last year, which is another joke I blogged on then.

Thanks for clarifying Jeff. I agree with both of you as the usbc should have a separate ballot.

Has a rule change been drafted so it can be presented to your local or State associations allowing it to be considered for the upcoming USBC convention in 2010 or 11?

This is something that is the province of the Hall of Fame board.  Last I heard there were considering a revamp -- not sure of exact form and don't care if it enables USBC Superior Performance to have a place in the HOF.

Oh, you mean like having handicap?  I mean, they're not in the same league (natch) as Holman, Ballard, and Monacelli, but in order to help them compete, we can create a special division just for them.  They can win that division instead of the one that includes PBA pros.

I don't know what kind of record those other guys have in USBC competition.  Were they ever state champs?  How many USBC Championship titles do they have?  Masters?  If their accomplishments are primarily PBA, then they belong in the PBA HoF, not the USBC HoF.

Ok, but I guess my point is, are you, or the others with resumes/reputations similar to yourself doing anything about it?  Have you tried contacting anyone at the USBC directly explaining why there needs to be a category for non-professionals?

Dan, been writing about this situation since before I was even on the ballot for the first time ... and have often talked to the powers that be.

Riggs,

It happens all over. My mother-in-law works banquets for a local Embassy Suites and the Ohio USBC has there annual HOF dinner there the first Saturday in November each year. She was nice enough to grab a program for me since she knows I bowl. In the performance category, Jerri Edwards was elected.

Now this is no way an indictment or to say she is undeserving as her listed accomplishments were very strong all the way back to college and PWBA along with her coaching credentials. This would be very HOF worthy if she had done any of them while a resident of Ohio. Since Jerri has moved to the Akron area back in the mid 90's, she has not bowled in anything other than an occasional league. She has continued her coaching excellence with Team USA, etc. but this was a nomination for superior performance. She has never bowled on a state or local championship team during her tenure in Ohio.

Please do not think this is a personal vendetta against Jerri personally as she is not to blame. The Ohio USBC is the one that nominated her and elected her. Since I have met Ms. Edwards a few times thru a mutual friend, I would venture to guess that she might have even been embarassed once she found out if was for performance.

From local directors with personal agendas to national decisions that are hard to comprehend, it goes on thru out all aspects of USBC.

Along those lines, our Wisconsin State Hall of Fame didn't elect Hank Marino its first year ... because no one nominated him. He's in the USBC HOF and was once elected the Greatest Bowler from 1950 and earlier!!!

And Wisconsin State HOF has an age minimum of 60 (!!) which means that Rich Wonders is just going in this year and he's been in the USBC HOF for years.

My question is where does the idiocy come from. It must be cultivated somewhere. Most of the local USBC folks I know are solid individuals. But when it gets up to the state and national level, I think the stupidity rate has to be approaching 50 percent.

I remember going to our state's annual meeting once. Lots of good ideas from the floor that would get shot down one at a time by the board -- which typically includes two or three guys that are wearing some cheap golf shirt affixed with every single patch they've ever been awarded. And don't get me started on the reps we used to get from ABC headquarters before the merger.

One thing I did learn very early on, though -- at just about every level in this sport, it's not what you've done, it's who you know and how much tail you're willing to kiss.
