Roto-grip Challenge
I'm looking forward to this.  We arrive in town on Sat, so I'll try to get out and bowl it Sat afternoon and Sunday afternoon as well.  I figure it nothing else, it gives you some practice at the convention center to get used to the approaches and "convention center" feel.

BTM
I did well in this last year, so I'll definitely bowl it again.

BJ
I have never bowled this one, I might...

40 frame game
Never done this one either....

Has anyone bowled the Roto-Grip Challenge?  I'm not crazy about it being only 2 games, but maybe someone could give us some insight.

The roto challenge is not really that difficult if you can hit your target over and over... The shot is shorter than the nationals shot, a little easier in my book, but that is just my opinion. I didn't think it was col din there at all. But others were complaining...

I agree with Mark 99%.

Roto- Sports Challenge was the "easiest" shot; I shot 420 for 2 and missed 2 easy spares because I wasn't fully ready for the synthetic "slide". I am about 15-20 pins under Mark in everyday bowling.

BTM was fascinating: you needed a polished something (? anywhere from pearl to solid to particle pearl depending on your release) to play inside with a 2-4 baord area, or play outside with a dull Buzzbomb or a 320 grit Granite Gargoyle type of ball with a 1  board area - pick your poison

Nationals was just as everyone described:
Team - shot is 8-10 at breakpoint with medium-strong ball and decent consistency. (Heck, even I shot 580.)

Minors: crap shoot, depending on who preceded you and what they did to the lanes. I saw "lucky" decent bowlers, as several people have bragged how good they are, and I saw previous Eagle winners get shut out. Sh*t happens. My inclination is to shoot minors at the 7:00 AM squad, just to get unadulterated oil, if I ever return.

Jeff,

Outside of bowling, did you enjoy your visit to Albuquerque?

Pat,

What I saw I liked, but in 3 days that I was there, I didn't have time for much beyond bowling.  Had 2 excellent meals/dinners: one at El Pinto (Mexican, not "New Mexican" - Delicisioso!!!) and Trombino's Bistro Italiano (EXCELLENT!)

Our organizer who does not bowl told us a terrific trip she took to a/the Botanical Gaadens.

I was surprised that the weather was very much like that we have had in NJ and NY, and more surprised to see some people out at 8 AM with short sleeve shirts when it was 40 - 45 degrees. I wore a heavy sweat shirt. I hope these weren't natives.!

The people were always super-courteous; heck, even the homeless who wandered around the Hyatt Regency downtown never said a word or came up to anyone.

Again sorry we didn't have more of a chance to hang out. Been to Albuquerque for the previous Nationals and dod some tourist stuff down at Old Town. Great place to visit.

Hey Jeff,

Glad you liked those restaurants. Those are two of our favorite places to eat. They were supposed to build a Trombino's on the West Side but it looks like they are selling the property they bought for it. My wife was a little upset about that. The Botanical Gardens is a great place to wander through.

Albuquerque was a nice town. People where friendly and me and my brother and most of the guys that we came down with stayed at the Doubletree. We had no issues with the hotel. We took advantage of the free shuttles to the casino (we went to the Sandia and did well). Noticed that downtown is pretty dead near the convention center. Shot the Rotogrip challenge, my brother did better than I did, but is a quick two gamer and its good warm up and if your are coming off a good singles and doubles, its a good time to shoot it ! The best thing is the bar is right near the squad room and the roto challenge !
A good time overall. Had a 1828 overall, should cash !

You had a few boards at the BTM?  I bowled it (Reno) last year and had to be near perfect to just hit the pocket.  They only oil once per day, so it may be a crap shoot as to what you get.  We didn't really spend any time in Albuquerque, but flew in there when we got married in Santa Fe.  Expensive, but a clean, beautiful city.  Had some snow early in the trip, but highs mostly in the 70's (October) and clean crisp nights made for beautiful weather along with the great scenery.  We still might go back this year for an early anniversary (and take a few balls and sign up for the sub boards).

Right ball and right line and right time of day and you get a coupla' three boards to play with. Last year and the year before were much tougher for me anyway.

If you shoot the BTM, go VERY early. Light flat oil gets butchered with each passing squad.
If you shoot the BJI, go very late. Need to break down the pattern to score. SHot seemed to be outside but heavy oil early.
If you shoot the RG sports shot, do it just before the 5 PM re-oiling. broken down is MUCH better, I had, to my eyes, a house shot, with zero pull inside. Had about 4+ boards to hit outside (maybe 10 to 7); I used 4000 grit Red/Black Monster.

No squads, just show up and bowl.  I believe it starts at 10.
