Side Tournaments

What side tournaments are worth bowling out in Vegas.  I will be making my first trip out the end of April.  Any advice is appreciated.

The 40 Frame Game is a lot of fun.  Take a couple of hours to go to it...just be sure to bring friends and drink beer.  Money can be won, but I think it's better to just enjoy being entertained doing something you love without all the pressure to perform.

Depends on what you are looking for:

As Lefty said, if looking for fun the 40 framer and it's foramt is one to do.

If looking for a real challenge, the BTM is the choice. Around 42" of oil flat, gutter to gutter. Do well there and it is something to brag about.

If you want to practice for the USBC Open, the BTM 1-2-3 tournament might be the one. It is a singlesm, doubles, trios tournament held at the same house the BTM but on the published USBC Open pattern.

There is also the Bowler's Journal tournament, BJI. This is ususally a more difficult shot thena THS, but not as difficult as the BTM. Also there are daily brackets and on-site cash payout for beating minimum scores.

New this year is the Beat-the-Board tournament at the Orleans, it is a 430 capped doubles event. I don't know much about it as the low cap doesn't make it feasible for me to bowl it.

My personal recommendation is the BTM. Once you've bowled on that, the shot at Nationals feels easy, lol. I have always found it to be a good warm-up to bring my focus into hitting 1-2 boards at the arrows and the break point, something I don't have to worry about on THS.

Bowl the 40 Frame game AFTER Nationals, you will be amazed at how well you do...after bowling in a phone booth on the USBC shot, then you have around 5-7 boards to play with...and it is indeed a fun event. The "Sour Grapes" frames are the key to scoring.

I agree have to go and bowl the 40 framer. I remember my first one in Reno. I had a string of strikes going allowed one shot to get wide went -/ put together another string of strikes. When I got the check from the tourny I realized it was a $900 gutter ball. Fun format would love to bowl in one again.

I bowled the 40framer.
House shot couldn't miss the hole.
Threw 36 strikes in it.
Made $1750 on the lanes in instant cash.
