When the PBA is gone it will not matter. Till then limit it to one per team and one per doubles.

I am sure I will get flamed here but I think there should be a 3rd division. I have been bowling for 30 years in leagues and my high scratch series is 747 (on a house shot) which would have been 95th place last year. My league average has been in the low 190's the last 10 years. I have bowled the last 3 Open's and will be bowling in Baton Rogue this year. The way it is now I know I can't seriously compete with the upper echelon of the regular division. I look at it as a vacation and a chance to bowl with my friends.

I say let them bowl. There are already bowlers of that caliber that are bowling in the Open, they just choose not to be full "PBA" members due to a variety of reasons. Im sure some of the guys may due well in singles, but being part of a team and the concept of team bowling will probably be completely foreign to them. On top of that, I know some of the bowlers in the Wisconsin area battled with the decision of "going pro" due to all of the different tourneys they could no longer bowl and Im sure other guys have had to make that decision all over the country, which I think is not fair to them.

I do think a 3rd division is needed, but that re-stirs the large pot of how do you keep things legit and regulate what someones average really is.

IMO they should be allowed to bowl and I'm not opposed to limiting them to one per doubles. However, allowing only one per team to my mind is not fair especially when you think about some of the loaded teams bowling now that include PBA title holders, Hall of Famers, multiple regional champions, Team USA members and, of course, the usual complement of "professional amateurs". If you are going to call it an Open, then make it open to all with only a restriction on doubles. Maybe we shouldn't even have that restriction.

With the exception of regional tournaments across the country the actual main tournaments of the PBA is a very small west cost regional any ways. Almost all of the events are bowled in one place, with a few others scattered across the west cost. I wouldn't call it a tour in that respect anymore.

I agree with KidLost. 16 tour events this year. 9 in Las Vegas, NV; the Masters in Henderson, NV and two in California.

Most non-major events only pay $10,000 for 1st place. How is the PBA surviving?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the pros we see on tour are only a handful of guys talented enough to be competitive on the PBA Tour. Top level amateurs choose the security of a 9-5 job over the Pro Tour. Many of those amateurs all shoe up at the National Tournament and do quite well.

The leadersboards are littered with ex-pro's and guys capable of competing on the pro tour.

Names I recognized in the top 100 of singles last year include John Szczerbinski, Dave Wodka, Ron Mohr, Andrew Cain, Dan Maclelland, Andy Morton, Tom Hess, Brett Wolfe...

The nice thing about the National tournament is there are NO RE-ENTRIES! Let them bowl.

I kind of agree with rollingthunder,if you let them bowl they should have there own division.A normal 200 avg bowler who only bowls once a week can not compete with the likes of Chris Barnes and the pba pros.

Though I agree with your statement. I'll add that a 200 average bowler who bowls once a week can not compete with the likes of Matt McNeil and other talented amateurs. There are some really really good players who bowl in this tournament.

And the current rules prohibit exempt pros, so really, only 50 some pba players can't participate. That's not going to bump that 200 average player seeking to cash very far down the payscale, when you have 60,000 participants.

Yes, let them bowl. They have an edge, just like the top amateurs & regional pros, but they still need to perform.

I enjoy the tournament, because it's a challenge. My only gripe was when Bryon Smith's team was permitted to switch years ago, and also that we only get 4 warm up shots in S & D event.

I concur on limiting practice. It's so sad to see people spend money to get action shots on the stub lane just so they can warm up. Five minutes would feel much better. That stub lane is a money making machine! That's been USBC's Money Train at the tournament for many years! The Stub Lane! LOL.
