This Could Happen To ME!!!!!
« on: November 20, 2005, 05:49:18 AM »
What happens if you show up at the tournament to bowl but you doubles partner doesn’t? Is there a sub list where I could pull someone from on the day of the tournament?

I know that there is an area on the web site where a person can request a sub before the tournament but what about the day of?

My “partner” is dropping hints he might not go. When I asked him flat out he says he is, but…….

What are my options on the day of the tournament?

There will be a sub board at the tournament, with bowlers who are in the area and available at that time. Get there early so you can get a good pick.

Thanks mumzie, hopefully I won't need them. At least I know I have an option.

This could get interesting.

I believe Corpus had a pretty small ABC association when it was there last time so the pool of available subs was pretty small (and the quality wasn’t the highest).

We had a guy who thought he was having a heart attack and was in the hospital during our team event (He didn’t have one and was ok). We were able to pick a sub up off the board. His average was around 175 and he shot 460.

I have to believe that the numbers are down since then.

If at all possible you need to bring someone along unless your are bowling the classified division.

Also often people who only came to be spectators can/will fill in. But again

I've even seen lane monitors filling in for missing bowlers in S/D. (in Billings)

Right now im debating setting up a team or not.  I live about 40 minutes from Corpus and bowl there frequently.  Yes the association is very small for the size of city.  There is only one bowling center in Corpus Christi not including the one on the Navy base.  What are the pro's and cons of being a sub on this large of an event?

Pro's are your bowling usually for is paid for. Con's is you have no idea who you bowl with but for free is a worthwhile trade. One of the locals young guys got on the sub board in Billings he got on a team and shot like 685. They bought him drinks for the rest of the night. Its a crap shoot who you will get but either through this board or the usbctournament.com board you can usually russle someone up. Always check in with Lucas Wyman as he does a great job helping with about any tournament issues set in front of him. He monitors the usbctournament.com site alot.

Are you planning to sub or bring in a team?  If you're planning to bring a team, you're either going to have to bowl it early (February) or late (June).  The middle months are all gone

As for subbing, the pros are you get to bowl free, get in brackets and sidepots and get to bowl on a fair and equitable shot.  Cons?  You could wind up on the the graveyard shift (11:30 pm doubles) or the early riser (7:00 am doubles).  Hi-Trak made a good point about not knowing who you'll bowl with, but unless you think you have a real shot at winning (not this chick... I'm a donator, and proud of it) just go and have a good time and enjoy the experience

I wouldn't expect to bowl free unless you're an emergency sub.  If you sign on with a team using an ad on the sub board, I would expect to pay for my spot.

Make sure you get a firm commitment a month ahead of time.  Plan out hotel and travel arrangments with this person so you are sure he is ready to go.  If you get down there without anyone, be prepared to take whatever you can get.  Make sure someone in the group has a cell phone with lots of available time because that will be your only way to contact potential subs off the board.

Last year, we lost our best bowler due to mother's illness and eventual death.  Obviously he couldn't come.  We drove down there not having anyone.  Turns out we found a superb sub we knew who was working the tournament.  He hadn't bowled in a couple years, but was a good enough bowler that he found his groove easy enough.  We were checking the sub boards and couldn't believe how slim they were as we bowled in June.  You can get lucky, just don't expect much if you're looking for a last minute sub.
