Lane Conditions
« on: December 01, 2008, 10:59:17 PM »
I know the site says something about being released in Feb 09.  Does anyone have a good idea on what the so-called "more playable" shot will be?  Possibly less volume than past years?

I think they should keep it the way it has been, it is US Nationals it should be difficult and let the cream rise to the top

I agree if they do anything to make it easier then whats the point.  One thing is for sure it will still be sport compliant.

I doubt this tournament's pattern will ever get easier.

As far as the shot itself being "playable," that varies from bowler to bowler.  Some bowlers can get the shot to be playable if they are outside of the 5 board and others play deep inside.

I just go out there and bowl like crap but have fun doing it

According to USBC, the shot in Vegas is supposed to be "more playable"... They're trying to entice more people to use this tourney as their family vacation.  I like the more challenging shot so i can whack the brackets, i count on that income every year.

so back on track, does anyone have an idea on what they're going to use? Do you think the new "pba house shot" would be a good candidate for the tourney?  is it too easy?

Where, according to the USBC, did it say that Vegas is going to be "more playable"?

From what I hear after a tournament this past week end that some pretty big state shooters bowled in... the outside volume was going to be less.  It was mentioned it would be similar to Corpus Christi a couple years back, a little more hook off the outside.  I thinking the double loads we saw, what was it about 2 and 5 last year? may be moved in a little.  Not only the family thing but with so many years in Reno they want to try to give more guys a reason to keep coming.  I don't mind it every so often, it gives the second tier a little better chance to taste some success.  But it still won't be that easy.  If I know Eric he still is going in with a target for where they want scores to average out to and although it may be 5 sticks higher or so than last year you still have to be pretty consistent with your shots.  Biggest thing the last couple years we noticed, is with the oil change the backends are tight.  Not so tough to hit the pocket, but to do it and have a decent carry percentage was tough.  Lots of 7 pins, for right handers.... After while you loose patience shooting spares and get lazy and that's all it takes to take a 200 game down to 170-180.  Unless you rifle straight at them you can't even relax on spares.  Need to bare down on every shot.

With the push the USBC is giving to the PBA Experience leagues. Why not use a PBA pattern.

The cream will still rise to the top...

They won't use a PBA pattern for a variety of reasons, including that it would be perceived as giving an advantage to PBA members. Plus, they like developing their own patterns for the tournament.

BTW, Iceman the reasoning you use makes some sense.  I haven't talked to anyone involved about Vegas but would imagine we may see a Corpus Christi-Billings type of reaction every few years just to change it up.  Softer yes and also with a different part of the lane in play but not a house shot and certainly no guarantee of scores - I proved that in CC and cost us the team a-e.

You won't see a Billings type of condition until they go back to HPL surface.  Pro Lane is much harder with less friction meaning for any given oil pattern you can get recovery sooner on HPL than on Pro Lane.

The patterns don't really change so much from year to year as do the lane machines and the oils.  I forget whether Corpus or Reno was the first year for the Ion machine, but they decreased the total oil volume a lot that year, while applying more reverse oil.  The next year the volume went back up.  Edge to edge patterns didn't really change too much over the last 3 years.  Albuquerque was the toughest carry for many types of roll, but was not much different to the pocket.

The biggest determinent to playing the lanes is buff length, which always stays around 38-40 feet.  Shorter buffs will give more guys a look outside in team, and longer buffs set up more hold inside as the track develops.
By buff length are you talking about over all length of the pattern???

The rumor might be just to create a buzz and gain added interest.  But like it was said before, I can't see it changing much.  Probably just a well thought out leak to keep people coming back in these difficult financial times.  Way to interject your 1099 form "CG", you the man!!  Hey! you wouldn't want to horse brackets next year would ya!

Normally the shot is around the 5 board, but timing and speed are critical.  The best way for me was to watch my break point instead of the arrows.
