Travel Advice for Reno 2007
« on: August 25, 2006, 04:50:58 AM »
I need advice for booking air/room/car for 2007. What have you all done in the past? I can get $1308 for a week with direct flights, room and economy car; four days will be $1110. Do any of you well-travelled ABC/USBC tourney guys have advice on how to save, where to stay, etc...? Thanks!

i wouldn't mess with a car. you can walk to most places.  If you want to go to a few of the casinos further out you can always catch a cab

Send a PM to Merkin.  He's a travel agent.

I agree that you do not need a car unless you want to go someplace else, like Lake Tahoe.  All of the casinos run shuttle buses or vans to and from the stadium (and the airport), so you can get to any of the casinos by going to the stadium and then hopping on the shuttle where you want to go.  All of the downtown casinos are within walking distance.  I have been going to Reno since '98 and have never used a cab.

Yeah, the car would be for going to Tahoe on the days I'm not bowling. Otherwise, I'd probably ditch the car.

K-Dawg,

Sorry that I did not answer your original questions.  In the past we have just rolled our own -- booking our own flights and cars on the internet and we usually use the USBC site for hotel bookings.  This year we are going to try to use a travel agent to get a group rate (one of my guys has a cousin who is a travel agent).  I say try because I am not so sure an agent can do better than we can on our own.  Every year I budget about $1000 for the trip so your prices are in line with that...my stay is normally about 4 or 5 nights.

As far as places to stay, I liked the PepperMill (stayed there in 2001) and did NOT like the Atlantis (stayed there in 2004).  In '98 I stayed at the Reno Hilton, which is nice, but a bit away from downtown.  Our group has not decided where we will stay next year.

If you are going with a group and looking to save $$$, I recommend rooming together and maybe sharing the cost of a car.  I have done this for the last few years and saved some cash.

K-Dawg...

Southwest Airlines runs a net service that they call "Ding".  It sends you exclusive deals on airfare each day....not always available to the general public.  I subscribe the the service and watch for my destination and departure locations.  If you watch this religiously...AND BE PATIENT....you could get a deal like $99 each way which is good depending on where you're coming from.
You may have to wait until a month or two before you bowl to book the flight, but it's worth it.

As for rooms...stay at the Silver Legacy or Eldorado.  You won't be disappointed.  Stay away from Circus Circus.  I've had too many bad experiences in that dump and I know of more than a handful of others that had the same problems.

I have actually found booking with the airline direct to be cheaper than the so-called low rate websites. As for hotels, I have stayed at Circus-Circus the last three times I have gone to Reno and everything has been fantastic. We go in groups of ten and have bever had a problem with them. Steve

Yeah will I am going to have the car.  I live in Boise so I am looking at an 8 hour drive to Reno.  It makes more sense for me to drive.
