Anyone care to explain it?  I'm looking at the graph from last year, same length, looks to be flatter ratio and a little higher in volume, but I'm not totally sure I'm reading it correctly.

Looks like a Nationals pattern to me.

A flatter left to right and front to back ratio.  It looks a little heavier like last year.  24ml is more than %95 of most THS.  10 and out is much heavier than most THS and will be the problem of most casual league bowlers who come to Nationals.  As always straight players may have a look out on the ditch with the right roll and equipment match up.

You've read the pattern right.  The distance of the forward (red) and reverse (green) loads are important.  Only going 12 feet forward and starting at 31 feet in reverse there isn't much of a blend at the end of the pattern which will tighten up the breakpoint.

We might be able to guess the breakpoint but only in relation to how we all roll the ball.  My guess might be in between 7-11 on the right and 5-9 on the left.

Unless it's been your job reading lane graphs is not always easy.  Good read Dan.

Not my job, I just like to learn even though I don't have the physical talent to put the knowledge to use.

Question

Lower Right hand corner, under the ratio chart is a bar graph (red/forward and green/reverse).  The numbers on the bottom correlate to boards, on the side...volume?  Which means compared to last year, the middle has slightly less volume (900 this year vs. about 1000 last year) and the outsides have more (300 this year vs. 175 last year)

Also, what does "total boards crossed" relate to?  Last year it was 465, this year it is 480.

(Yes, I'm a dork and print and keep the graphs)

You're right about the bar graph.

All that these graphs are showing you are the literal application of the oil on the lane.  Imagine the bar graph as is if you were looking at lane level.  It's pretty easy to imagine the taper of the pattern from top to bottom (lane to top of oil pile) and side to side (gutter to gutter).

You're right on about the amounts this year as opposed to last year and how and where they're applied.

Now tie that in with what the means for the difficulty of the pattern.  Using the graph and the information you've already deduced: "compared to last year, the middle has slightly less volume (900 this year vs. about 1000 last year) and the outsides have more (300 this year vs. 175 last year)."

Why will this pattern be a tougher shot?

(Hint: The magic number is already given with the lane graphs)

Total boards crossed describes how much oil is placed on the lanes and is used in conjunction with the total output 24mL and oil per board 50mL to create an equation to prove exactly how much oil is on the lane.  (It's been 2 years so I forget the equation, but it's how a lane man can prove that each lane is oiled the same.)

If you can answer my question Dan maybe this should be your job...

Total boards crossed is the loads times the number of boards.  Since they start at board 2R and go to board 2L that is 37 boards.  If the number of loads is 4 that is 148 boards crossed.  Don't know if I entirely understand it but that is how it was explained to me.  I didn't have the privelege of working with Kegals lane machines when I was a lane man and to me it be more interesting to know how loads compute to units.  We always had to make sure we had a certain amount of units.  And I know some house shots around have 70 units in the middles.  If I had to guess by ball reaction the middles at Nationals is probably about 35 to 40 with 12 or so wide compared to the 3 or so we see on alot of house shots?  Am I close?

My guess would be that it should be tougher because it is flatter.  So the ball will be more likely to hold if you send it too far out and it will jump if you pull it.

hopefully the carry is better this year, no matter what i did last year i could not carry, at one point in doubles i had 18 9/ in a row...i went 29 clean in doubles...stupid split in the first game...but it was free hook but no carry...

I've been attempting to understand the pattern graphs and I have a question. What is the difference between forward oil and reverse oil? I understand the term forward and reverse, but what are the different affects each has on a ball reaction? Also I see the terms "Defensive oil and Offensive oil" used when describing the type conditioner/cleaner used. What is the difference?

 Thanks.

Lane # 1...That's the name of the Game!!

Pretty easy answer to the first one. When the lane machine is running forward down the lane (towards the pins) it lays "forward" oil. When the lane machine stops and comes back towards the foul line it lays "reverse" oil. Also there is usually a spot at the back of the pattern where the machine isn't laying oil but buffing it out, carrying the oil it laid and spreading it out to a certain length. There is also usually a small area where the forward and reverse oil overlap.

As far as offensive and defensive oil, I don't know the technical differences but they are two different types of oil. From what I understand, the name says it all. Offensie oil usually allows for slightly higher scores, defensive oil tends to create slicker lanes and lower scores. Hopefully someone with a little more knowledge on this can speak up.

Hope this helps.
