Update: USBC Open Championships price hike not final yet
« on: January 17, 2011, 01:32:26 AM »
I updated my blog:

Update: I received an e-mail from USBC's Pete Tredwell late Monday  afternoon stating that the decision to raise the entry fee for the USBC Open Championships in 2012 "is not final yet, and a final decision on the entry fee will be made by next week."

No further information was being released.

My blog on the entry fee increase. Hopefully it answers all or most of the questions people will have:

Jeff,

I read your blog and in my personal opinion the USBC is cutting their nose off to spite their face. Its bad enough they  are holding the tournament 3 out of 4 years at Reno and then raising the entry fees in Baton Rouge.  I also understand the teams who go every year and make money or have backers, but this is going to kill the little guys who want to go and have a good time.

Some will say its only $50 this time, but take into account how much it costs to get to the tournament now days and that $50 will seem like $100 or more.

I know it will cost a ton this year just to get to Reno unless the airfares come down, and if they don't, it will be my last till it comes east of Chicago.

Thanks for the info Riggs.  Based on what Tredwell told you I guess USBC was hoping to get by without mentioning this for as long as possible.  I see you give a lot of reasons why the 25% increase, but I don't see how they can, in this economic climate, justify 25%.  Maybe that's why they won't try.  My team and several others from our area have already decided to cease our participation after Baton Rouge.  Now I wonder if even Baton Rouge may go down for our teams?  It is my firm hope that USBC doesn't destroy what is one of the greatest bowling tournaments in the world.  But their recent decisions (booze on the lanes, Reno interminably, and now a 25% increase in the entry fee) doesn't convince me that they have what's best for the Open as their main priority.

I must correct you on one thing.  Yes the delegates at the last convention turned down a proposed dues increase, however the USBC Board recommended that it not pass.  So don't put all the blame on the delegates for that one.

Bill it's actually a 33 percent increase over the current entry fee, and it's another reason not to go after Baton Rouge. I simply do not understand what they are thinking.

They came up with this Eagle's Nest thing to lure people in, yet I haven't seen much to get excited about unless you are bringing 4 or more teams. It's hard enough getting 5 people to commit, much less 20 guys.

i say you he dead!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since I didn't go in 2010 and not planning on going in 2011 .. I have no right to complain. My thing was I was very solid on going in 2012 .. this slight change will probable make me re-consider my thoughts for 2012. If the USBC is thinking about getting us a BIGGER break on HOTELS and TRAVEL maybe it might be attractive .. but adjusting the PAYOUTS only helps the guys who are getting money back .. most attendees DO NOT!

Perhaps USBC is better at predicting the future then they are at running their business .. looks like they see things turning around by 2012 .. I hope they are right .. or is it another gamble that WE ALL LOOSE?

It is a 33.3 percent increase. Bad math in my haste.

Wouldn't it be nice if the USBC had some competition for this tourney so that maybe things could go back to the way they used to be ? (Except Reno would NEVER be an option..)  The USBC has destroyed what was once something to really look forward to every year...  It would be so nice if a competitive Organization would start its own tournament to coincide with this tournament...  One year west coast , one year east coast , one year midwest...

My 2 teams have already discussed this tournament and decided not to go at all, starting this year.  Going to Reno is old and somewhat expensive to get there, plus the place is getting real run down.  We have gone every year since 1990. Plus, getting 10 guys to go every year is starting to be very difficult.  Last year I had to pick up 2 bowlers off the sub list.  1 guy showed up with no money and one of my friends lent him $100 which he never paid back, the other bowler emailed me a week before we were going to go and cancelled.  Last year was a very bad experience.  USBC can do what they want, I am done !

This maybe a little off topic, but how close is the USBC to moving to a 4 bowler team? My state (Ca.) tournament has had 4 person teams for a couple years now and it is very easy to get 4 to go than 6 or 10.
