What's the significance of the A, B, & C squads? Is this a form of seeding or is it just a way to break the field down into manageable groups?

I think it is just a way to break the field down. It would be hard to have 400+ people bowling on 82 lanes in one squad.

Thanks Pop, I thought this was the case but this is the first time I've followed the Open and was not familiar with how the tourney is run.

The larger tournaments like the USBC Masters, the World Championship, and the US Open don't all fit on the lanes at one time. In a very large house you might fit the WC.

I think one of the standard tournaments did that, as the house only had 32 lanes and they did the Round of 64 in two blocks (even though they'd all fit at two-to-a-lane, there would be no reserve lanes and no space between pairs).
