USBC Average
« on: January 16, 2010, 03:04:27 AM »
I'm sure this question has been asked before and I missed it .. but:

If leagues are going to start (eventually) with RED/WHITE/BLUE patterns .. how will league sec report averages? Will it be obvious when looking up a bowlers average what pattern it was arrived at from? Are tournaments going to be held as R/W or blue and how do they arrive at entering average?

On the PBA tournament with R/W/B was there a big variance with bowlers on each pattern?

Stop me if I'm misinterpreting but I thought they were three different patterns .. or maybe that's not the right word .. conditions that were defined as soft/more difficult and difficult. If that be correct .. wouldn't an average on the soft be WRONG to be used in tournaments?

I guess I'm asking a question assuming the degree of difficulty separates the patterns (conditions)!

I doubt that they'll use the averages on the different patterns to "rate" you at a tournament.  You might average higher on the hardest (Blue) pattern on a good lane surface than you would on the easy (Red) on a worn out lane surface.  It might be a good measuring stick of what you might shoot at a familiar house, but that's about it.  The PBA uses several variations of the named tour patterns for a reason.  Depending on the lane surface, the brand of oil and lane machine, as well as many other factors, make true standardization very difficult.

Thats where I'm confused .. IF a center does use one of the patterns .. how will the average for that pattern be recorded in the USBC AVERAGE? Do the league sec's now have to report the AVERAGE with the CONDITION?

If you have answered this question I'm sorry it went over my head!

Maybe the answer is 'The league name will define the condition" .. That might be the resolution!

We're all guessing at this point Joe.  I'd like to think they would include the condition when reporting the averages, but somehow I think it will be further down the road if at all.  I still think as far as tournament rating goes, there will only be "sport" and "house".  There's enough argument about how many pins to adjust from a sport to a house condition.  Now you'd have three levels of house shot difficulties to muddy the water more.  Plus every style matches up better with different conditions.  My highest average during my summer PBA league was on Chameleon which is normally considered the most difficult.

Joe - They haven't fully defined the program yet.

I don't believe the Blue pattern is sport compliant, not flat enough.

I watched all the qualifying at the Red, White, and Blue and for the professionals I don't believe there was much difference in averages between patterns.

So I would assume that any league that used the patterns would report the average as just another house league average.

Only sanctioned sport conditions with the bowlers paying the higher sanction fee would get average rating adjustments.

USBC has these patterns up on their web site.  They refer to all of them as "house" patterns.  After looking at the graphs, I doubt that any of these patterns will do much to bring integrity back to scoring. So who cares what the average is.

Don't you use your "highest" average at tournaments?  I don't see an issue unless a bowler was to purposely bowl on a difficult pattern/difficult house soley for the purpose of bagging.  Although I tend to believe that after a period of time (such as over the course of a season) bowling on tough conditions, one can "forget" how to score.  In the end, I think it all works itself out.  When it comes down to it, one still needs to perform at the tournamnet, under tournament conditions.

On the Sanction Form that the Sec. or President hands into the local association they have to pick a league format 9 pin no tap, standard 10 pin, sport/PBA.  All USBC would have to do is extend that to include the "color" patterns, but it means you could not switch mid way through league season.  If you resanction for the second 1/2 you could change.  But it would not be difficult for USBC to know what pattern you are on.
