USBC City for 2011
« on: May 15, 2007, 10:38:05 PM »
My vote is back to one of the best trips in 15 years and one of the highest voted trips.   Billings, Montana voted as one of the best trips ever.

Then those cities need to bid for it.  The tournament can't go where it isn't invited.

the big issue is finding a convention center that will host the event and is not scheduled or booked in advance. Most are under bookings several years in advance,I'm sure it is not as easy as we think it would be. Finding one that would host an event as long as Nationals runs is the biggest stumbling block.

Sorry about that, most people don't.  Every year when bids are announced, east coast people blame the USBC for the tournament always being out west, I mistakenly thought that's what you were doing.

I would love to see some eastern cities, preferably southeast though since we always go in the beginning of March and I'd rather be where it's a little warmer.

In the end, we have to take what we get.

The reason a lot of cities don't make a bid for the tournament is that they ( the city) has to give up more than they are willing to. It's not like USBC pays for all the storage, or the office spaces they use. And the cities don't really understand what they get out of it, the Tax dollars and the influx of money into their communities. ie hotels rooms, car rentals, resturants. it all adds up to way over what the city itself has to come up with

Whiel Boradwalk Bowl may be an amazing place, the USBC Nationals are NOT held in a local center, but in a Convention Center that the city needs to give up a lot of space for approx 7 months?

I've only attended 3 events so far, and from what I've noticed, they are centered around casinos.  I'm not sure if that is the standard or pure coincidence, but if it is a "requirement," that significantly reduces the locations on the east coast.  Being from Jersey, I could recommend Atlantic City and Foxwoods (Connecticut), but those are very popular venues and I'm sure that they are tons of offers that will conflict.  Maybe Chicago?

Why does everyone try to make it harder than it really is?  Overthinking makes the game that much more difficult.

Both Syracuse and Buffalo here in upstate New York have casinos within 20 minutes from downtown.

Unfortunately, no major city is going to book the tournament... do the math. 48 lanes, 2 team squads, 7 days, 5 men on a team. If every squad sells out (which never happens), that's about 3,000 people a week. A major show in Chicago, for example, can easily double that attendance and doesn't require the  set up and tear down time that bowling does. In addition, a major convention city doesn't have to pay the extortion fees that the USBC expects.

Vegas in 2009 is as close as we're going to get, we better enjoy it.

yeah.. billings was cool, but the lack of night life and the fact that the airlines can charge $$$ for their flights make this unattractive, but i did have fun when i did nationals out there..af

A bid for the USBC tourney not only must include a facility large enough to host the event.  The facility must be available from January to July and the city must provide it rent free.  In addition the city is required to put together a package (minimum of one million dollars) to help offset USBC expenses.  The total tournament package Wichita submitted was reportedly worth 2.1 million.  Few cities have a facility they can offer to USBC.  Convention centers are not only booked years in advance for events, but many events are held yearly and a city can't afford to displace (and lose) these repeat customers for a one-time bowling happening.  Casino areas often come into play because they help come up with the one million plus bid USBC requires to offset expenses.  These are the reasons we see the same half dozen or so places bidding each and every time.  I think the days of the "national" tourney appearing in a large number of different venues is long over.
