USBC Nationals - Bad Racks
« on: March 06, 2009, 05:32:42 AM »
bowled on feb 25,26 at vegas was utterly amazed at how bad the racks were on all 3 pairs we drew - 27/28, 53/54, 55/56.  lane 53 was comical the headpin was left of alignment by a full inch.  really closed pocket and a stuffed packed shot left a solid 10 almost everytime.  on all 3 pairs I bolwed every lane had one pin off.  I personally bowled horrible as I have a knee injury and a severe pulled groin (oh, lots of fun getting that loose without beer) and late me emphatically state, the racks had nothing to do with my scores.  You have to hit the pocket a hair more frequently than I did to blame any rack.  That said I was really disappointed in the racks, I epxected much more - like the pins being set down in place  I come from a town with 3 bowling centers and you cant find 5 good racks in the 50 some lanes so I am used to it.

seems others have a problem with it too as I was hoping I was not imagining it.  My teamamtes never see that stuff like I do.

So what did you shoot? What did you use? What would you change if you could?

I know about the leg problem as I bowled in Reno and then had to have my left knee replaced 2x's.

if you cant play tight lines or swing the ball I suggest a dulled up ball playing up 7 board and pointing the pocket.

if you play inside like Pat does you are fine but carry will be the challenge, lines like 18-13 or 15-11 are very playable. swinging the entire lane is comical watching washout after washout near me.

The best look I watched was tweener playing 19 to 13 with a Pin Slasher that was around 2k abralon or so. If he got it outside it never made it back, he shot 639 with a 174 middle game most guys and gals were doomed like myself.

These players putting up 770 plus are just great imo, that is brutal out there but with the right balls score able.

well I bowled about as bad as I can.  In 36 previous games at nationals I had been avg 197, but only rolled 1500 all events.  pathetic.  sshot was really really tough in d/s.  we were 11:40am shift and that is 3rd shift without oiling.  guys in front of us all playing dull oil suckers between 4 and 3rd arrow.  swinging it out.  carrydown was bad outside 13 or 12.  heads were toast.  if I did it over I would have had a super shined up reactive drille to go long and still recover strongly.  cuz I was playing so deep around 4-5 th arrow if it didnt finish it was washout city or flatsville 10 or 8-10.  outside was unplayable and I tried for about 6 frames and it lead you to beleive it was doable but I came to the conclusion I am not norm duke and to move back in.  team was playable and I carried horrible left a bucketload of 10 pins.  missed a few to make things worse even using plastic.  I was so stiff in  my groin I could not make a proper bend off of my approach.  take plastic for 10 pins.  in team there is a playable line from 6-9.  just dont swing it or too fast.  has some hold early.  my fury solid worked well at 1500 grit.  inside was flaky early in team.  tema session disappointed me the most cuz I had a good look and did not execute.  I knew what I had to do but was having problems staying down at line and my knee and groin got worse.  team for me was very playable.  the d/s session was so toasty I had no chance with my 14 mph fluff ball.

also was amazed at how long it took the pinsetters to put pins down.  slowest I'd ever seen at nationals.  approaches ar enice but a little sandy feeling.  for us with knee and groin problems, sandy is not good.  everybody else had no issue with approaches so I am sure it was me.

Being Vegas and newer they were sandy feeling I brush every frame, it took me 3 sessions since then to get grit out of my sole and red heel.

It did free up my arm swing for accuracy on a house shot, last night i was throwing the ball great and watching my target much better.

If you threw sanded stuff up 8 I have another clue as to why you couldn't get a 10 out....because that is the wrong way to play the lanes.

I threw a 1000 abralon Gamebreaker 10 to 7 the first game, left 3 flat 10s and shot 202...switched to my 2000 abralon HyRoad and had great carry playing pretty straight and shot 220+ my last two games of team.

Not trying to call you out...but if you play the lanes wrong you won't kick out a 10...no matter how good the racks are.

If you're trying to "call me out" and make me look stupid don't bother....I can admit it wasn't the look on Sunday that resulted in my doubles/singles scores.  I threw it AWFUL...probably the worst I have in a few years...anywhere.

Wonderful combination of drinking too much the night before making some "swamp thumb", putting too much pressure on myself ot make up for the bracket debacle on Saturday, and just an overall bad day with my footwork/swing.

The look on Sunday was way in and throw it at the second tracer.  I had a league look.....unfortunately I threw it like I was joining my first league.

I'm not trying to be a jerk....I'm just saying that I saw NOTHING with surface roll well while I was there.  Lots of "plaque" down the lane if your ball had tread on it.

Russell,
thanks for the posts.  And your honesty on how you played minors and how you did.
How did you not win any money in brackets for team?
Those look like good scores for team brackets!!

Lately, everywhere I go I've been getting crappy racks.

In a 3 game set, I reracked about 6 or 7 times today. It's ridiculous.
