USBC Nationals Pattern - download
« on: February 16, 2009, 06:18:12 AM »
is it possible to download this year's or last years usbc nationals pattern onto a programmable lane oiling machine?  if so where can I go to download these files?  our proprietor is willing to do this but not sure how.  we want to practice a couple of times on something resembling what we will see in vegas, understanding totally it wont be the exact same thing, but much tougher than our local ditch where you almost cant miss unless you trip and fall down.

thanks doug

If you go to the bowl.com site you can download patterns.  There is one section where you have to login.. that is for the PBA animal patterns and the championship patterns. I think you have to be a certified pba xperience league house to log in.
There is another section that gives you I think the specs to enter into the machine.. depends on the machine though.

Unless I'm wrong, the USBC was not going to release the pattern spreadsheet until the tournament began.  Start date, 2/21, no?

Why do you think the USBC is waiting so long to release the pattern? The bowlers that get to go to Vegas in the later stages of the event get to practice all they want on the pattern while the bowlers in the first week pretty much have to guess. Just doesnt seem fair.

They wait mostly because they are still testing it (as far as I understand).  With the lanes being brand new, and then the masters last week, it is difficult to design a shot until you know what it is going do with people out there.  I believe they come up with a general idea, and tweak it the week before the tournament.

I am not a big believer in it giving you a large advantage if you bowl on it ahead of time.  Oil, conditioner, lane surface, age, and having a team of 130s straight bowlers on your pair are all factors that you cannot reproduce completely outside of the tournament itself.

I think any shot that forces you to be accurate is a good practice point.  Learning to control your break point from different angles on tight shots will help you just as much as being on the actual shot

Belgarion has it correct. They do not settle on the final parameters of the pattern until after they test it on the tournament site lanes, which are not typically constructed until just before the tournament starts.

The last few years the pattern has been posted the Wednesday or Thursday before the Saturday start day.
