USBC Open Championships-men only?
« on: April 01, 2008, 03:55:35 AM »
I was wondering why the USBC does not have a separate tournament for men only?  The women have their own tournament while the men and women compete in the USBC open Championships.  I would be all for the women bowling in the big tourney if they didn't have their own tournament.

This is the same situation in county tournaments.  We have a womens county tournament and an "open" tournament.  I'd just like to see a Men's Championship since the women have their own.

I have the same question. It's on the local level too. I'm against it totally.

I agree that in this day and age with the equipment and the fact that all these tournaments have separate divisions by average and with handicap, the women can more then compete with the men.  There is no need for a separate woman's tournament at the county, state or national level.  Not to mention that there are a ton of women out there that can beat most of the men scratch.

I thought that the purpose of the USBC was to establish the men and women competing under one roof.  Hopefully this does happen.

just to follow up...we all pay the same dues, therefore we should have the same opportunities as women members.

And you know if there was an Open tournament and a men's only tournament; but no womens tournament, that women would be complaining just as much.

The ABC Tournament was opened to women to head off a lawsuit that the ABC could not afford and most likely would have lost.

I think it is great that women compete with us. That is one thing bowling has over other sports and that we should be emphasizing all the time - it's gender neutral, size neutral, etc.

It's great competing with some of the top women in PBA or any other events - the pins don't know what your plumbing is.

For those who don't like the women competing for reasons of self interest I would assert that on balance they contribute more to the USBC prize fund than they take out. And if someone like Wendy McPherson wins a title more power to her.

The only reason I am against it is because it gives them one more tourny to compete at.  Let's look at the local level, the ladies get to compete in the womens city tourney as well as the open city tourney.  So right there it gives them a shot to bowl twice.

I don't think anyone has a problem wtih women bowling with the men, the question is why do they have a seperate tourny and men don't.

Go to one women's tournament, and you'll have your answer.  Being forced out onto the approaches to do the Chicken Dance doesn't happen at the Open, and that's one of the reasons I'd rather bowl it.  The women's nationals in which I've bowled seem to be more of a social event except, maybe, for Queens week, and I'm not good enough for the Queens.

Heaven forbid that the tournaments became one and we were all subject to the Chicken Dance.

Also, I've never had to bowl in pajamas at the Open, but that was the team "uniform" the LAST time I bowled in the women's version of a national tournament.

Because when ABC was founded, they didn't call it the MBC (Men's Bowling Congress). But the women came up with WIBC to start. So now even through we are governed under USBC, they still kept a Women's Open. Let anyone bowl that wants to! I don't see a problem with it

Not allowing women to bowl in the Men's Open Tournament would be discriminatory against women.  It doesn't even make sense to discriminate against men, only against women and other inferior groups, that's why they can have a women-only tournament.  It's not discrimination, it's simply that no men are allowed to participate.

Here in Missississippi, it's a state law that the women are allowed to have their own tournament that excludes men and that men are not allowed to have a tournament that excludes women.  It's the law, so it's not discriminatory.  Our legislators felt that women are not able to compete against men, so to make it more fair to the inferior competitors, they must be allowed to hold a women-only tournament.

I think NicholasE said it best.  I have absolutely no problem bowling with the women.  However, I do not think they should have their own tournament if they are still going to bowl in the open.  And if they get their own open, so should the men.  Or they should pay a higher sanctioning fee since they receive more benefits/privileges than the men.

And Shelley, it is discriminating against men by saying they can not participate.  Maybe that's the law in Mississippi, but I don't think it's the law for the nation.

If you're that hung up on being able to compete in the women's tournaments why don't you sue? I am serious. Deb, has it right - be careful what you wish for.

The only thing that matters is that the USBC open events BENEFIT from allowing women - more entries, more prize money, more competition.

No one took anything away from men - opening it up added to what us men have.

This topic has been beaten to death over on bowl.com.. It has been suggested that the women should have to choose which tourney to bowl in, the Open or the women's tourney. I think this is a fair option.

If I registered under a womens league would i qualify to bowl the queens? That would be the same as how women can bowl the USBC tournament. Just pondering.
