What balls for Nationals?
« on: September 19, 2005, 11:43:16 AM »
I like to know what balls that would work for Nationals? Any suggestions from anyone or who has been there. Also what drilling may work as well.I throw right hand and speed 18-20 mph sometimes down and in or swing out.
I hate ten pins but love the game of bowling with just the right ball to take them out.

You want to use equipment that is very even on the lane.
Since you will probably be playing in the middle of the lane,
you want to use a layout that rolls early and arcs.

For example, an Ebonite Vortex V2 Sanded which has been popular
the last couple of years, the layout used was pin under the
ring finger, cg kicked out about 2 inches with a x-hole in the
thumb quadrant. This layout is what many of the ball reps at the booths
at Nationals suggest. Very popular.

So you don't need high end equipment.

Balls i would suggest that are out right now:

1. Ebonite V2 Sanded
2. Columbia Hyde
3. Hammer High Rev
4. Hammer Switch Blade
5. Columbia Messenger Ti Low RG
6. Raging Inferno (If you can find one)
7. Columbia U-Turn Particle

Agreed with Bob---unless you have a ton of hand. This is going to be a long response Im sure...

I go to Nats and attempt to play a fallback shot---get left, swing the ball to the 13 or 14 board at the break point with something controllable (for me). I never want something that is going to give true recovery from that break point---I was something that will roll true off that break point and not continue to hook. To me even rollout is ok---the lane will create the power.

My most success the last 2 years have been with an Ebonite Tornado polished that I could just lay off of. The ball was flippy by nature, but just laying my hand behind the ball and letting it roll---the ball would flip then stop and shred racks all day. The only problem with this ball, is once you get just a little deeper and read a little more of the lefties head oil, it gets a little squirty.

2 years ago in Reno, I had a decent amount of success with a dead sanded Tour Power. Granted I was playing 6th arrow to get the ball to the hole---but I was in the hole on every quality shot.

At Nationals thats the key, keep the ball in play. Also Bob is correct---dont play 10 board no matter how good you think you are. You will waste a whole lot of money for a very frustrating vacation. No hand---play straight up 14. Some hand that goes straight---play either straight up 14 or with a little bump to 14 depending on ball speed, or play right up 5 (need to be really sharp to do this---misses are 3 counts or washouts all the time). If you have alot of hand and can play deep, do it. Some guys who crank the ball, go out there thinking they can play the same line they do at their local centers---they make for good laughs---watching them miss the head pin right, followed by missing the head pin left on the spare. Then they go greek church. Its a whole different ball game. If you dont think outside the box (or wall when it comes to bowling) there, you wont do well.

I find the key is to not have too much equipment.  Bring a ball for the fresh, something strong but controllable.  The shot is always inside.  If you can control the backends on the fresh then doubles and singles is easy.  This year I struggled on the fresh as always using my Strike Zone which I had drilled the dy before.  Shot 550.  I tried the whole lane but coulndnt get confortable.  In Doubles and singles I shot 705 and 670 with my Classic Zone pin above fingers on midline and cg kicked out at 30 deg, x hole on my axis.  I was playing 27 at the arrows and sending the ball to about 12 or 13.  If you can play inside and I mean deep inside, you can score.

In general for most people, which types of covers seem to work best?  Sounds as though a few people have had success with mild pearls...  how about particle pearls or mild solid resins?

Just my opinion, but the Solids have worked best for me, I used a Pantera to shoot my highes series of 680-some with a 289 game in singles.  You would want a ball that has the best control.  The more snap your ball has the bigger trouble you can get into.  The whole key with Nationals is to stay in the pocket, and if you dont strike hopefully you'll leave makable spares.  It can get real easy to leave a bunch of junk if you change balls because you're leaving 10-pins.  You know, I bet a Hi Rev by Hammer would be an excellent ball.

Interesting you might say that...  I was thinking to myself that one of the "old" solid resin balls (Turbo X, blazing violet, original danger zone, quantum) or something else along those lines might be just the ticket...  enough to push through the heads, but strong enough on the backend to finish...
