Recent Releases Spartan & Crossover-Your Surface
« on: November 18, 2010, 08:10:53 PM »
So, I got to thinking about this as I-Bowl/Stephen, getu/John and TwoHands/Steve noted in their various threads about their success with the recent Visionary releases and the surfaces that they used.

I'll start what is the best ball surface for you.  State ball surface, type of lane surface and best known lane condition bowled on with your stats.

Mine are:  Stats. right hander a tweener with average speed 17.5 mph in heads and 15 at deck on CATS. 300 - 325 rpm's.  Track diameter 11"s and axis tilt 17 deg. Axis rotation 60 deg. ave.   5" over & 0"  PAP.

I bowl two 5 man leagues on a lane surface of 15 year old Brunswick Anvilane 39 ft. wet/dry THS moderate volume in middle tapered to 8 and dry outside of 5.

Spartan http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q29/scotts33/Bowling%20Equipment/VisSpartan.jpg  right now P2000 abralon considering going back to OOB P1000 abralon.

Crossover http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q29/scotts33/Bowling%20Equipment/VisNBCrossover.jpg  right now P3000 abralon considering going back to OOB P2000 abralon.

The reason, I ask this question is that in the past the majority of the the time I go back to the way Visionary releases the ball in an out of box surface and for some reason this pretty much always works for me.  Do others see this?

My stats:  18.5 mph at release, 540-570 CATS, league shot is 40' THS with fresh backends, heavy volume in the middle.  My axis rotation depends on what part of the lane I am playing.  Typically the deeper I go, the more "around the ball" I get.

Crossover I took it from OOB to the spinner and added a light coat of Factory Finish.  I did this because I watched someone else on my team throw the ball at box finish and it just seemed that the solid part of the coverstock wanted to grab the lane early.  I wanted something to go down and lane but still give me some motion once I encountered carrydown.  Ball has been phenominal as I am averaging 250 with it

Ogre Solid I took to 1000 abralon simply because the OOB finish was too dull for my stats.  Tried it at 2000 but when I got into alot of carrydown or had to move deeper, it wasnt enough to get to the pocket and carry lots of 9 counts.  The 1000 abralon surface allows me to get a good read on the pattern and works best when I can play more in the track area when the lanes are fresh.

Spartan I have not gotten too comfortable with it yet.  Tried it at various surfaces and seems to fall right in between my Ogre and Crossover.  It is a little more overall hook than the Ogre and yet less backend than the Crossover.

my stats 18-19 at release , 450 rpms pap 4 5/8 x 3/4

As for the crossover i have tried a few different surfaces but went back to
1000 abralon , it works the best for me. I really love the crossover.

the spartan and have tried a few different and really cant seem to find the right match yet. However i am still working on it, right now its at 1000 abralon

Ogre solid, 2000 abralon i still really like this ball.

Immortal pearl, 800 wet sand, then i use my own blend of polish bring it back to a mirror.

ogre particle 800 wet sand

NB Pearl - 1000 abralon , then polish

Interesting both Steve and John higher uber rev prefer the Crossover higher Rg that the Spartan whereas most lower to medium rev players seem to like the medium Rg Spartan.  Hmmmmm.  Is there a correlation?

Jason said that many up the backers forward roll players don't match up well with the New Breeds.

I was talking to Jason the other day and we were discussing the same thing Scott.  One thing Jason had mentioned is that 'stronger' layouts that you usually wouldn't expect to work end up working quite well.

For example here are two picks.  One of the layout on my NB Pearl and the other on my Crossover.  Although I love the pearl I get a much better reaction out of the layout on the crossover and Jason really didn't expect it!!

I fall into this category Scott. I redrilled the crossover and ended up polishing it also before I got a good look with the Crossover. On the other hand, I have 2 Spartans and Love them both!

lmfcoa, here's a question for you.

On the layouts of the balls posted, please define "better reaction out of the layout on the crossover".

I'm curious for what you are seeing with the 2 balls and the lanes you are bowling on.

Without knowing specs, I can possibly see the NB Pearl being used with some oil as it could possibly read through it, and should give you a good night with it possibly being used for all 3 games.  The Crossover though, to me, looks like a long and controlled drill and really is more for a drier lane than anything else.

Mind you.....this is with my non-drilling limited knowledge.....but that's what I see.

Update after using both the Spartan in first game and Crossover 2nd and 3rd games in Thurs. night 5 man league.

Spartan @1000 abralon
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q29/scotts33/Bowling%20Equipment/VisSpartan.jpg

Crossover @2000 abralon
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q29/scotts33/Bowling%20Equipment/VisNBCrossover.jpg

I didn't shoot lights out but a last game 244 showed me finally the potential of the Crossover.  On this type of lane condition which can be iffy at best as we normally follow a teachers league that uses old urethane and poly.  I didn't get there early but it seemed to me that the league in front of us didn't use the pair we were on.  This pair 25-26 in this center at times can yield lower scoring than normal.  Judging the trouble my team mates had both the Spartan and Crossover along with my using a softer hand gave the balls a nice reaction.  A better reaction that anyone else on the pair.

Generally, I am now seeing the reaction I thought I would see from the Crossover and believe in both balls leaving them at OOB surface is probably for me the best reaction from both.

I can see where it can be difficult from week to week when you are always having to follow other people.  Good to hear you are having some success with the Crossover.  Getting anxious for the MixBreed to be released.

good to hear you got the match right.

I have been using the Spartan as of late with pretty good sucess. I had to go back to OOB to get the reaction i was looking also.
Polished it was too long, and missed the break point. Now at OOB it really comes alive like i thought it should.
I thought it was weaker then my crossover but i think now both at OOB the Spartan is alittle bit stronger and more angular.
The crossover reads the mids like no other for me and is one of the smoothest on the back end, however its also strong on the back .

the mix breed will be sometime in jan 2011, Jason has been backed up with the spartan
