Adding for a tournament arsenal
« on: December 25, 2007, 04:06:27 AM »
Alright guys . . . I spoiled my wife for Christmas and now it's her turn.  I am starting to travel to more tournaments and am looking to complete my arsenal.  I figured I needed a few more solid reactives in my arsenal.  Here's what I have so far:

Frankie May Gryphon 1000grit abralon
Immortal Pearl 2000 grit abralon
Ogre Pearl 1500 polished (oob)
G-3 Gryphon 1500 polished (oob)
B/G Centaur 1000 matte (oob)

I was thinking of getting the Immortal Solid, either the Ogre or AMB Centaur Solid, and then something else.  I figured I'd take the FMG back to 400 grit and then work the rest around that to cover the varying conditions.  The only ball I haven't been fond of is the B/G.  I haven't thrown it enough and I hope more time with it will pay off.  I would consider the AMB Particle due to the fact that I am normally the lone lefty and need all the help I can on heavier patterns.  Let me know what you all think.

Thanks,
Tom

If you like the Ogre Pearl any, I would very much so consider getting the Ogre Solid. Very good compliment to the Pearl.

So other than the Ogre should I add a few others?  Which do you think?  How do you think I should lay them out?

IMO, you need something to fit in the middle, another control piece.  I think you ought to take the FM back to 500 abralon and get a Ogre Solid and take the cover up to 2000.  I have heard that at box finish, the Ogre is pretty strong.  So, to separate the Ogre Solid from the FM, make the FM a true heavy oil piece and the Ogre solid a good medium oil, control piece.

This is a pretty good suggestion on what to do.  But if you get the Ogre Solid try it OOB first, then take it up in cover if needed.  I have seen it in action at a wood house that for me was very frictiony (is that a word?), and while I was playing 20-22 to 10 with a FMG at 1000 this other guy who had comparable hand to me (but 3mph more speed - 15 vs 18 on quib.) easily played around 5-7 at the arrows to 3 and in with the OS.  We both carried well, so depending on your game, you may not need to change the cover.

I talked to him (because we used to bowl against each other in tournaments when I went that way as a youth bowler, and I only see him a few times a year) and that was the first time I had seen the ball in action and it was at OOB surface.  He said he thought it would be stronger, but was happy because it was very readable.  Also, this ball was not burning up, he was sending messengers everywhere and it carried great, he just couldn't open the lanes up with it.

Thanks for the advice guys . . . I had already considered taking the FMG back to stock or close to it, if I got another ball.  I will probably get the Ogre Solid and fit it into my arsenal.  Are there any other holes that may need filling?  I believe I'll have most conditions covered, except for a flood.  But I can't see the need for a ball like the AMB particle.  I may use it once every 2 yrs.
