After 16 months - my G-3 Gryphon!!!
« on: December 31, 2008, 04:33:06 AM »
Yes, I finally got my hands on a NIB G-3 Gryphon!!! I always wanted to get one as a replacement for my beloved Trauma (R.I.P., *sniff*), even lost hope after I heard that there had been big trouble with the German semi-professional import "crew". But finally, the pipeline started working again, and since yesterday and about 16 months of hope, I got the ball I wanted!!!

Am I sick, or a loyal customer? Therapy--?

Ball looks pretty, only little blue in it, appears almost like a BW Pearl. And soothingly few engravings. During setup, we even decided to drill out the pin (ball came with a 3" pin, CG stacked under a 4.5" pin to PAP distance pin in the ring finger), and now the ball has a rather stealthy look.

Also works as hoped for - I had high expectations due to my formidable Frankie May Gryphon, and during the first test shots on a rather demanding sport shot the family ties between these balls were odvious - while the G-3 gets much easier down the lane than the FMG, it shows a nice arcing back end with a very good and powerful back end reaction, the same which I love about my FMG. Not snappy at all, just as I had hoped for

Yippie!

Glad you like it, exact opposite of mine though. It goes straight, hits dry, goes left hardcore. No midlane at all. Fun ball.

I love my G-3 as well.  I had lower top weight in mine.  So,I went with the pin above my ring finger and the cg kicked way out with a weight hole.  With the cg kicked out ALOT and a weight hole, my G-3 is very rolly and continuous on the backend.  Definitely not as skid/flippy as my Gargoyles and Crimson Exes.

Mine is 15.15 lbs. gross weight with 2.65 ounces top weight. Some time ago I talked to the import guy who is a kind of amateur staffer and who uses a G-3, too, and his ball has the pin above the fingers and is very flippy.

I haven't much shots on mine, but with the high flaring core I can imagine that you can get a very sharp back end reaction out of it when you drill it for length.
I wanted mine to be a bit more arcing (my flip ball is my current Fuze Igniter, which came with according specs and was just set up to react accordingly), so the lower TW pays out. It just had the longer pin distance, but drilling the pin out seems to be a good decision, as a good compromise between length and arc. I can play it on a line just inside of my FMG, and it respond very well to friction on the lane without being jumpy - something I am very afraid of with more modern/aggressive coverstock. It is also the reason why my Smash Zone, the initial G-3 replacement, effectively failed for me.

So far, the G-3 just delivers what I had hoped for, and, yes, I am really happy that I finally got one. A rarity, esp. around here, but it seems to fit well into my arsenal and to my game. Hurray!

Stay tuned for a review in a couple of weeks.

And, by the way: a Happy New Year:
