Anyone Double Thumbed a NBPP?
« on: December 18, 2009, 02:31:30 AM »
Title says it all.  I am looking for anyone's experience double thumb drilling or putting a X hole on gradient line P3 or P4.

Here's my NBPP with no X hole.
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q29/scotts33/VisNBPPpolish.jpg

I am using it 6:30 PM 5 man league after a teachers 4 person mixed league with heavy use of poly and old urethane. I am seeing massive carry down and all righties are having a tough time carrying.  Stay straighter thru the heads and go high or open up your angles and leave light leaves.  Light strikes carry best....otherwise anything flush in pocket is a flat 10.

I am thinking about putting a X hole at P3/4 double thumb it to give me more pop/movement.  Wise move or is core not dynamic enough to see that much movement?

BTW....I've tried different surfaces and 2000ab being that it's still a pearl particle leaves slight shine as you can on pic. I like the particle exposed some so it will grip the backend.

Scott,

I don't have experience using a double thumb layout on a NBPP, however, I do have one on a Kinetic Energy.  Mine is drilled pin 5-1/8" from axis, above ring finger, with the MB 3-3/4 from axis, and the weight hole is right next to the MB.  Current finish is 4000 Abralon.

I believe the NBPP does have a dynamic enough core for this layout to help you.  The KE has an RG of 2.48, differential of 0.040, and an intermediate differential of 0.006.  By comparison, the NBPP has an RG of 2.56 and a differential of 0.052.

With my layout, I see an excellent midlane read, a defined movement on the backend, and continuation through the pin deck.  The KE reads the midlane excellent, and I think the NBPP will do the same with the low load particle in the coverstock.  Last night in league I was able to use it for all 3 games with only a couple board adjustment left throught the night.  The backends got tighter in game 2 and 3 last night, but I was able to continue using the KE and still kick out the 10 pin.

Sorry for mentioning a Track ball in the Visionary forum, but I hope my experience with the layout will help.  If you have any other questions about the layout, drop me a PM.

I can't give you any real world experience because I don't own any of the New Breeds with the lack of oil in NJ but I have tried two weight holes in the P4 area on two different balls.

On my Orange Warlock the ball melted at the arrows and rolled out all the time.  I actually had this ball completely redrilled.

On my Green Gargoyle I never seen a ball turn up like this that I've thrown before, very hard rolling, strong move off the spot.  It is different than my original one which was much more succeptible to oil in the back.  It is not so much snappy like my original but stronger still because I suspect earlier flaring gets it to start a hair sooner and roller stronger.

My point is I don't know if it is a good idea to do that to this ball with it's higher DIF but you can try it and if it doesn't work plug the weight hole again.  I believe you will see a difference.

Thanks for the comparison directdrill.  No problem about mentioning another type of ball IMO it's all about learning from each other.

Waiting for Jeff to chime in I am sure he will.

Update:  Yesterday 12/18 practiced on massive carry down took the NBPP to 500/4000 abralon finish and this produced the best surface that I have tried so far.

Monday going to talk to my driller and see what he thinks about an X hole and placement.

sorry, Scott, been working 14 hours a day Thurs. - Sat. Just got home and saw this.

Like directdrill said, the NB's core is already "loaded for bear" with that high differential. A P4 core will increase it and provide increased dynamics, IF the hole is big and deep enough.

Now, I haven't done it 'cause I'm in the same pickle as Anthony.

But now you're in one, because you now have to determine where all that extra hook and kick will take place. When you do such a hole, duller balls will use that extra differential to hook earlier, while polished balls will use it to provide more backend, in general, with a smaller percentage taking place in the midlane. So your question is, at P4000 grit (which is where I last read you had your NBPP), where will most of that hook happen. I believe most will be at the back with maybe 30% in the midlane. It should help you solve the carrydown to some degree (maybe all the way), but how much more overall hook will you get? I'm not sure.

Hmm, maybe I do have a ball that use a P3 hole ... if I can ever get to my driller again.

Scotts33, just make sure that by adding the p3 or p4 weight hole, it doesn't take your static weights over the 1oz usbc limit. In drilling for this type of layout I like to get the cg in the thumb quadrant, which adds thumb weight and when you place the p3 or p4 you're removing the thumb and possibly adding finger weight. Just weigh the ball and check your weights first and you'll be able to see how big of a bit you can use and stay legal. Just my $.02, Bruce

I totally agree Jeff.  Going to take it in tomorrow afternoon discuss and weigh to see where we are and what can be done.  Try it at 500/4000 abralon then adjust from there if I need a bit more skid then polish.  The point of all this and getting an NBPP was to get a  pearl particle that would read mids somewhat but finish hard enough to work well on carried down conditions which I see a lot.

Thanks also Bruce.  Understand what you are saying and will weigh.  I know we can put a X hole (how large and where is the question) in as we had discussed this prior to laying out and drilling initially.  My driller is one of the best in my area.
