React-A-Tack coverstock balls
« on: June 13, 2007, 06:44:39 AM »
How do the three (Immortal solid, Centaur AMB solid, Frankie May Gryphon) compare to each other? In general, what conditions are they best used on etc.?

Hi DynoMo,

All 3 work excellent on Medium to Heavy Oil conditions.  Immortal Solid hooks the most followed by the AMB Solid and then the Frankie May Gryphon.

Ryan is spot on and I would believe him considering it is his father whose name is on the Gryphon.  I believe the AMB Solid and the FM cover about the same amount of boards but with the same drilling, the AMB Solid is a little longer and more backend than the FM.  Flare potential is the main key.  The Immortal flares the most, then the AMB, then the Frankie May.

Thanks for the help Ryan and Steven. Thinking of getting the Immortal solid for heavier oil. I've read on here that you should drill this ball a little weaker than most because of the extremely high differential, any suggestions. I have some info in profile, most of my stuff is drilled with pin placements of 3 3/8" - 4", the S&A and TA have 4 1/2" pins and the PPEX about a 5" pin.

Drill the Immortal with a 4 1/2 stacked layout.  This will give you the best of both worlds.  The pin at 4 1/2 will help the ball enough getting through the heads.  But, with the high diff, it will still read the mids extremely well.  Then, with the cg also at 4 1/2, it will conserve just enough to have strong continuation in the backend of the lane.  This should put the pin above the ring finger or thereabouts.  Start with the surface at box finish and then go from there to adjust the breakpoint down lane.  Frankie May calls this type of layout the "rev/flip drill".  Hope this helps and best of luck.

That sounds good Steve,  the only other thing I would add is the placment of the balance hole if needed.  This is a very high flaring core so you do not want to put the balance hole in a place that you might flare over it. Do not put the x-tra hole beyond your VAL (Verital Axis Line).

I am very impressed by my FMG's coverstock strength. I wanted it for medium conditions, sanded it down from 400 grit OOB to 1.500 just before drilling, but this baby still needs good head oil to work. Very strong and smooth piece, more grip then expected.

I can second the "warning" concerning the Immortal Solid - unless you are really speed dominant, be careful with the setup. It is a very good oil ball for long patterns, just make sure not to "overuse" its potential.

Great stuff, anyway!

How do the FMG and Immortal Solid differ in terms of oil handling and reaction type? I drilled my Immortal Solid last week and put pin under bridge, mb 2" right of thumb. This is one strong ball!!! Not all that early, but it moves a ton in the midlane and backend. I realize that the FMG with the 400 cover will move sooner? Also, will it handle more oil with the OOB cover or are the two balls about the same? I ask because I've yet to drill my FMG and I have no idea where to start in terms of drilling it.

IMO, the Immortal just offers a lot more of early roll potential, especially for speed-dominant players. The FMG has a smoother breakpoint, is more arcing, as far as I can tell and describe it - in fact, it reminds me of some older high performance balls like the Trauma ER or the Raging Red Fuze. It has a very heavy roll in the end phase, is very predictable. It is, in fact, a simple ball (simpler than the Immortal), and that's what I love mine for.

Both have very good traction and, the React-A-Tack cover responds very well to surface changes, does not track out easily. If forced/drilled to, the Immortal will IMO have a sharper breakpoint due to the stronger mass bias and handle more/longer oil, even though I think both balls handle lore or less the same amount, the Immortal's core just being overall stronger when drilled the same.

If I had to setup both (and knowing now how strong the FMG already is), I'd check to set them well apart. I guess they are OOB pretty close to each other, just doing the same thing in very different ways (FMG arcing, Immortal sharper, more "violent"). I'd even consider a similar drilling, leave the Immortal at 1.000 OOB as a reference for long and juicy patterns and adjust the FMG's surface to fit "below" it on less oil. I guess a 2.000 Abralon finish or 4.000 will set it apart for medium shots as a combo, although it will need head oil because React-A-Tack has much grip to offer. Then, there'd still be room below for a pearl ball.

As an addendum, here's a video of a friend's Immortal Solid, it is the ball I am referring to and we had some discussions with our balls' experience since Visioanary is very new and exotic around here. He got it because of its high differential to experiment with higher speeds: http://www.probowlers.de/uservids/immortal.mp4

I agree with Dizzy.

I have my Immortal Solid drilled 4.5 @ 75*, 1000 abralon, and have my Frankie drilled 5" with no Xhole, 2000 abralon.

The Frankie is way smoother at the breakpoint than the Immortal. The Immortal will turn the corner on anything, and is the only ball I have sanded that I can play deep angles with.

The AMB Solid, to me when I was using one, fitted in between both of those. However, I can get more length out of the Immortal, than I could the AMB.

Haven't tried the Reacta-Tack cover with polish, as I haven't had a need... That's what the other balls in the line are for

Dizzy- I always love your posts. You are so thorough. I don't think our styles are very similar, but I often benefit from what you have to say because you always give enough info that I have a solid point of reference. You let us know where you stand. A big "thumbs up" for that!

Thank you very much! I try my best to give a wide reference, since I know that styles vary very much and everything in bowling is pretty relative!
