Visionary question
« on: August 30, 2007, 04:07:28 AM »
I have an Ogre solid and I have it at 1000 grit, this works great for me on the house heavy oil shot.  The only issue is the ball shines up after two games, it really looks like someone used Finesse-it on the ball.  Does the cover on the Frankie May or Immortal solid have this issue as well?  I actually love my Ogre solid with a light polish, and I would like to get something else for the heavier volumes of oil.  I just don't need anything to strong though, just looking for a ball compareable to the Ogre solid that doesn't self-shine as bad.

thanks

Do you wipe it off after each shot?  Maybe just wiping the oil off will solve your problem.  Get a pack of microfiber towels from the automotive section of Walmart, gonna be around a dollar a piece in packs of five.  Great, great towels.

Few issues here from my view point.

First, SH is right wipe off after each shot.  I clean my equipment right after league while there at bowling center with Legends ball cleaner which I find to be the best cleaner I've tried.  Immediately takes lane shine off returns them to same state as before bowling.  I do believe Legends/Lanemasters were going to get their cleaner approved by USBC....not sure if that was done this summer.  charlest may know or Laybzzz.  If, it is on approved list you could use it during competition.  You can use other approved ball cleaners during competition...this might be your best way to go...cheapest way to try something different.

Second, Solid Ogre is Eradicator and FMG and Immortal Solid React-A-Tact.  OS is 600 matte which is not 600 abralon from what I understand.  IS is 1000 matte same thing here.

From my experience abralon surface finishes are smoother than matte wet/dry sandpaper finishes.  Scotch brite to me is closer to wet/dry sandpaper than abralon leaving some ridges and valleys in the coverstock more than abralon anyway.  I could be wrong here but that's my impression.  charlest could add here....he knows more about ball surfacing than most of us.

Third, OS is way lower differential than either the IS or FMG....so after some carry down and back ends mellow out the IS or FMG might work better as long as layout on both were conducive to your technique and lane condition being bowled on along with their ball surface.  I find the OS to be a good ball out of the bag as long as you don't develop hang/uneven break point to the outside on a more even condition.

Ball surface is a big factor in ball reaction.

I wipe the ball with a towel after every shot and the ball gets cleaned before it goes back in the bag eveytime with an Ebonite cleaner, not sure of the name, powerhouse maybe??  There is a lot of oil and this is a normal problem for everyone, but you normally get 3 sets in before a ball starts to look polished.  As of now I take it to the proshop every week to get a dull surface before I bowl.  Ebonite balls were not nearly this bad for me, so I am thinking of switching back?  I like the reaction I get, just don't like having to sand the ball weekly.

FWIW, I see lane shine on many different balls from different manufacturers.  Storm/RG is worse for me than Visionary.  I can't say anything about Ebonite as I only has The One and I kept that 4000 polished.

Why not try your approved cleaner after every game and see if it will keep it in it's sheen state?

Two things come to me have you tried Clean & Dull after or during bowling that will surely get any oil ouy of the ball and keep it dull rather then sanding each week. If you prefer you could also do the bath technique to get the oil out. I prefer to use the Clean & Dull or I believe that it's called Clean & Tacky now great product now under the Ebonite brand used to be a Track product but Ebonite bought the maintenance line and kept the formula the same just changed the name and it is legal for use and on the approved list. I've seen  Ebonite,Roto,Storm,Hammer etc... balls shine up fast on the lanes during league also so I doubt that it's just Visionary covers that get lane shine. Dull smooth covers will get lane shine quickly no matter what company. I'm sure charlest will chime in when he see's this thread.

One POSSIBLE reason why the Ogre is oil-shining up so quickly is NOT the cover, but the fact that the core has such a low RG differential, which, in turn, implies very little flare. The IS and the FMG both have EXTREME flare; so the oil lines will not overlay one another, but be very spread out.

Again this is only a possible reason. The other is the amounts of oil and where you play.

All dull ball, resin or particle, will get an oil shine over time; there is no avoiding that. Some sooner; some later.Even a great cleaner like Legends will only put off your having to refresh the cover; it will not stop your having to do that. Of course it puts it off longer than most other cleaners. Also the use of Clean and Dull after every 3 or 4 sessions on heavy oil will laso help a lot.

The Ogres are general control balls meant to hlep you covercome wet/dry or over/under situations. If you want a stronger oil ball than the solid Ogre in the Visionary line, the FMG, Frankie May Gryphon is a good choice. If you need more the FMG, the AMB particle is as strong (not big hooking, but the important part: oil handling) as they get.

I bowled last night and they actually incresed the oil volume!!  I was second high in the league the first game with a 170!  I did clean the ball between games and that did help.  I watched a guy throwing a super carbide bomb hit the 6 in the face 3 shots in a row!  It is the oil volume we have that is the issue for sure, I have never seen this much oil before and neither has many people in the league.  I think I am going to get either an Immortal solid or Frankie May to use at a lower grit.  Just due to the fact of how much I like the OS where it is, I really don't want to change it.

Yep if you are on longer heavier volumes....I'd go with the FMG or even the AMB Particle if a Super Carbide Bomb is skidding that far.

I drilled up an Immortal Solid last night drilled weaker/the guts a bit out of it.  5 1/2" pin to PAP putting the pin over in bridge area pin slightly closer to middle finger and VMB kicked out to a 45 deg. layout no x hole.  Finishing weights 5/16 oz. finger and 1/2 oz. positive.  It still flares quite a bit but my FMG stronger than the IS with a stronger drill.  Both OOB.

I'd bet there's either something wrong with the oil machine or they have not stripped the backends or a combo of both. The amount of oil you are now describing often cause havoc with the pinsetters, belts and ball return mechanisms and everything else, causing managers and mechanics tons of problems. Ask around before buying a new ball. I'd also bet you don't have that much oil for very much longer.

So, what did you think about the IS with that drilling?

I like it Wayne.  Got to test it on some real oil....even pattern across the lane.  OS would hang a bit but the IS was very consistent off the spot.  Could not miss the 1-3.  This was in OOB.  Going to leave it that way for a THS that I start at next week and see what happens.

Now I am wondering how close the IP is to the G-3???

All dull equipment will eventually shine up, some worse than others.  What I do, is use the different colors of the Scotch brite pads, to clean my ball by hand everytime I put it back in the bag.  Of course you can't do this between games, but at least you could clean it, and keep the surface where you want from night to night.  I use 4 of them, and they allow my equipment to never die, and keeps the cover stock in awesome shape.

Burgundy Pad is about 400 grit
Green Pad is about 600 grit
Grey pad is about 900 grit
White pad around 1100 grit

Again, you do this by hand, which allows very little change to the surface, but your ball will be super clean and dull every time you take your ball out the next night.  You will just have to play with what pad works best for you.
