Ogre solid and blue AMB Particle Centaur
« on: June 04, 2007, 12:32:25 PM »
Sorry, this is not a review.

I drilled an Ogre and a blue AMB Partile Centaur both 15 LBs and the coverstock is at least 1 3/4 inches thick.  I was surprised.  With the weight blocks being so large/heavy, most bowling ball companies only have about 1/2 to 3/4 inch coverstock on 15 LB bowling balls.  I'm prety sure Lanemasters/AZO had a solid coverstock, but this was the first new generation ball I've seen with such a thick coverstock.

Hope to the throw the blue Centaur tomorrow and my Son will throw the Ogre later this week.

I meant to post something about this earlier.  Even my Blue/Green Centaur has a very thick cover.  Hopefully that means that there is plenty of surface to suck up and distribute the oil.  I also equate thick covers with durability.  That doesn't necessarily mean anything because I had a very thick covered Storm Thunderflash crack while sitting on my rack.

Sorry, no. With its stock 600 grit finish, it needs medium-heavy at a bare minimum, unless you have 25 mph ball speed.

Many of us have taken it to 2000 - 4000 grit or have added a healthy dose of polish to get it to handle medium to medium-heavy oil.

Several companies use a no-filler design, others use that only for some balls, particularly those that have otherwise very large cores.  It seems to be standard practice for Visionary and Lanemasters, but Dynothane did not use fillers on their high-end Soaker balls except for the Centrifugal Mass and NGS.  Rotogrip doesn't use fillers on some of its lower end balls like the Planet line.  Some of Storm's high-end asymmetrics don't use fillers, the core is large enough that there just isn't much room for it.

I did get both the Ogre and the Blue Centaur for heavier oil.  My Son is between a spinner and a low tracker, so Frankie May set the Ogre solid to help him handle more oil.  I'm hoping between the cover prep, core and layout, he gets a better red on oil.

I am a medium tracker, somewhat inverted and oil is also my nemisis.  One league I'm in, my XXXcel never turns the corner as is the case for a lot of league bowlers in this league.  So I wanted to try the Blue Centaur.  Ed Shuler layed out a weak driling on this ball so that I might be able to use it on other patterns then just a flood.

I was at the BTM last year while at the Nationals and the lane condition was flooded.  I had the Super Carbide Bomb and Super Carbide and I did see a wrinkle.  This guy was throwing the Blue Centaur and had a great read on the pocket.  Not only was the ball hooling and getting to the pocket with ease, the carry was great also.  Unfortunately I watched him the set before I bowled and I thought the condition was easy.  He made it look easy.  My low ball track didn't help, but it was floode.

I'l throw it tonight and see if its useable on my Tuesday night league which is heavy oil just over the morning oil which means carry down.

Still not a review

I went to league last night to try the blue particle Centaur that I bought at Nationals.  We were dealing with a flood the first several weeks,  My XXXcel wouldn't move.

I threw the blue particle Centaur last night standing on my normal starting point. The ball went through my my intended mark and continued on to take out the 7 pin(RH).  The ball came back with great oil rings for the most part.  Watched a couple of other bowlers thtrow their bowling balls and they rolled out also.  So I put the blue Centaur back in the bag and pulled out my Megaton.  The normal shot was not there even though we sen the lane machines run just before league.

The ball was drilled with the pin 1 1/2 inches above the bridge and the 3 inch pin directly below.  My pap is 4 7/8 and 5/8 up.
My Son will throw he Ogre soon and I will try the blue Centaur again soon.

Nic,

The problem is that it sounds as though the cover is too strong.  With the high load particle and the high flaring core, that ball is a monster even for strokers.  You will probably need to take the cover up to about 1000 to get the best use out of the ball.  I have drilled several of these and it took just that for everyone to be able to use it.  If you try it again and it still hooks too much too soon, sand up to 1000 and try it.  It will come to life.  Don't give up on it.
