Do some visionary balls overlap?
« on: August 01, 2009, 06:40:12 AM »
Hi

I just became a test staff member after browsing this forum as well as urges from my cousin.

I know this is might be stupid to ask, being a member and all, but I just want to know, based on the collective section of this site, if there are any current visionary balls that if you have one, you can't possibly have the other because they virtually do the same things provided the conditions are the same?

I tend to ask a lot of questions (just looked at some in the miscellaneous) but I ask them because I really love the game and want to learn as best as I could.  I apologize if this question is inconvient or trollish to some.

PS: Betsy is a really nice person who seems to really enjoy her job.  She forgot to send me pictures of the shirts through email, but she laughed it off like it was nothing when I mentioned it and re-sent me them immediately.

Just buy the whole Ogre line and there is not too much overlap, get a G-3 before they are gone otherwise Gladiator series can be skipped imo.

I think VBP has done a great job from keeping their stuff from overlaping.  IMO the Gladiator Series may a little.  I haven't thrown it, but from reading reviews it seems like the Ogre Pearl could sub in for the Gladiator Pearl.  I threw the Gladiator, it was a great ball, exactly as advertised.  But, my Frankie May is my favorite.  That's why I have 2 with different drillings and surface, obviously.  The Ogre Sereis is fantastic!!  Haven't thrown the Solid or new Urethane but the pearl, ss and particle are money.  I would absolutely pick up a G3 asap.  This ball is great when the lanes open up.  Ogre SS is really good for this as well but the recovery from the G3 is better due to the stronger core/cover combo.  JMO

Hi, welcome to the Visionary users.

As Barry and Tommy said, Visionary tends not to do much in overlapping their ball release reactions.  They like to fill in gaps in their ball lineups, but because most of us bowl on THS patterns, I think the balls will look like they do overlap a bit more than they actually do.  You may notice this more between different lineups, like between some Ogres and Gladiators, but in each set, the balls should give different reactions.

Read what VBP says about their releases in their promo materials or on their website and use that as a guideline.  If they say a ball if for heavy oil, it is.  If it is for lighter patterns, it is.

Since you are now a member of their test staff, don't be afraid to call or email VBP and talk to Jason or anyone else there if you have any questions about how a ball will fit into your arsenal.  They are very helpful, just like Betty is.

You can also ask various members here who are very experienced with Visionary and other balls, such as Charlest and Scotts33, just to name two others who haven't posted here yet.

If you're a new member, get a G-3 and Frankie May before they are discontinued.  They are both great balls to own.

akt22,

Can you list your stats. and types of lane conditions your normally bowl on.  Type of line/trajectory you prefer to play?  Do you bowl on wood or synthetic.  What shift?  Fresh or broken down?  Do you know your ball speed PAP etc.

We can give you some ideas when we know more about you and your technique/style.

Visionary has a plethora of equipment that will work but if you give us some ideas then we can leave out some and suggest others.  Are you right handed or left?

VBP balls in general don't overlap. I agree get the Frankie May and the Ogre line is money. First ball out of my bag on THS is Ogre SS down and in track area (6 to 10 board).Right handed stroker, 16 mph.

No problem

First my stats:

I'm a righty

I've never had someone measure my speed or revs but I can give some approximations.

The counter on my ally usually reads between 12-14 mphs depending on how I throw it, so based on that I'm probably med to low speed.

I also use a wrist positioner, so I'm definitely under 300 rpms.

I've had 3 people measure my PAP and they all came out differently.  But generally all their answers were around 5-6 inch over and 1/4-1 1/4 up.

I bowl on synthetic lanes and the pattern is a typical house shot that is fried in the mornings or evenings and fresh in the afternoons.  However, my manager will put out different pba patterns on Mon and puts me on them either by suprise or suggestion. This is the main house I bowl at. I also bowl at a house that has wood lanes and another house that floods the lanes as well.

I don't have a specific preference to what line I like to play.  I just do whatever the lane gives me.  If it's playing outside near the gutter, I'll do it.  Same with swinging the ball at 4th arrow, but typically I play between the 2nd and 3rd arrow, standing on board 15-20 with a breakpoint of 5-10 boards right of my mark.

akt22,

Are you doing the 4 ball test staff membership?  I'd be looking at these four considering your technique and the gamut of conditions you see.

Heavy. FMG  Pin next to ring or lower.  Use this as your heavier ball.

Medium slightly more.  Solid Glad Pin above slightly.  Use this as your THS medium ball smooth arc.  This ball is not skid flip for most a nice ball to start out on the fresh without the over reaction.  Replaced the Char Ex.

Medium-Dry. Ogre Pearl  Pin above.  Next ball to use moving in to catch some head oil enough pop off the spot and will handle a small amount of carry down.

Dry. B/G Centaur Label drilling per Visionary website or pin above fingers and black locator pin right of thumb but keep it close. With your PAP make sure you get this drilled right.

Ask Jason or Jim for drilling help and with your pro shop operator.  Get your PAP measured.

These are just my suggestions others will say other balls but I am going off what you put down on your stats.  Don't just go with a Visionite's favorite ball get a line up that will work for YOU.  JMO.  Ask Jason for help he's good at getting people the right equipment for their style.

BTW........here's one important factor that lots of folks don't take into account.  All four balls I listed  are very good sport condition or flat pattern balls if drilled correctly.  You can't say that about every Visionary ball so take that into account also.  All were rated by BTM in the 8 range in 1 to 10 for sport patterns.  I always use that info. when I am trying to put together an arsenal.  One skid-flip poor sport condition ball is fine a G-3 or SS but I wouldn't be carrying a lot of them around if bowling tourney's.  That's just me.

Say hello to Betsy she's the bomb!

I'm doing the bronze membership currently, that's why I don't have my ball choices yet, but I'll take your suggestions into account.

Also what's the difference between the ogre pearl and something like the gladiator pearl?  I was looking at one of the threads here in this section of the site and it seems the slightly above the ogre pearl in certain catagories.  So I'm curious to know how different it in actual comparison to one another.

just like other companies balls there are three things to look for.

1.) amount of oil you want the ball to cover

2.) length it tends to get

3.) reaction off dry boards

for instance. the ogre pearl and gladiator pearl. the both are designed to start their hook early. one does it by the cover (O.P.) and the other does it by core (glad. P) BUT the gladiator pearl will react far quicker to dry boards.

now thats just an example and i know it isnt the best example but you get the idea.

^ with those three things in mind you can place balls according to how you want them to fit in your bag regardless of manufacturer.
