Visionary covers harder then most?
« on: March 31, 2010, 02:29:04 PM »
I was just wondering if Visionary covers are harder then most other covers on the market.the reasons I ask is for the most part all my visionary stuff seems to clear the heads better for me then most other balls I've owned.at first I figured it was the higher RG's but now I wonder.
Second reason I ask is I bought an OSS,O Blurp and an Oger particle all used with who knows how many games on them and they all look fairly new with a few small nicks here and there.I also recently picked up a Gemstone with 900 Global cover and only after a few games it looks like it's been rolled down the street.the other night we had a lane malfunction where three storm balls and a roto got chewed up really bad and in the mix was my Blurple and the Blurple was the only ball that with stood the punishment from the lane machine.

so why is it that Visionary covers seem to be so strong?I'm starting to think they are harder shells.

i was wondering that myself. everytime i bring a visionary ball to my driller he always comments on how hard the covers and core are because he has to go slower when drilling the holes. also all my visionary stuff shows FAR LESS wear and tear on them than my other stuff.

I have actually thought the same thing.  My Green Gargoyle is 10 years old and only has a couple nicks in it.  It has NEVER been resurfaced.  NEVER. All the labels are still in pristine condition as well.

Jason Wonders (VP of Advertising at Visionary)told me that they don't soak up as much oil as other balls, aren't as porous, and can last without resurface or rejuvenation for many times over normal modern balls.  He said he had a gladiator solid untouched for 500 games and still reacts the same.  Told me this when asking how to take care of them compared to my old arsenal of Storm balls.

I have had my set of 6 Visionary balls for a month now, I bowl 10-15 games a day.  They are doing great, and I have noticed multiple things about how much durable they are than my Storm balls were.  First they don't seem to really scratch as easily.  Also there's a ball return in the alley I bowl at that always put little dings and scraps into my Storm balls.  They were really bad, every shot you could see it.  Well with my Ogre Solid on that lane 3 games in league, the dings were very very light, and hardly any on the ball.  So that seemed to prove something totally more durable with the coverstock than any of my Storm balls.  Every one of my storm balls on that lane I've used look terrible after just one game and still have the marks even after 3-4 resurfaces.   I can't really easily find them on my Orange Ogre, have to look real hard and there are only a few.

So I have seen this same thing, they definitely are way more durable.  Not sure if it's that they are harder or more flexible, or more elastic, better composition and don't dent cause of that.  I also swear they don't cause the lane to break down as fast either, I'm guessing cause of the non-oil-soaking qualities of them.  I can play a line way longer with them than my Storm balls could ever handle doing.

I do not think that the covers are harder, but less porous, and the overall construction of the balls looks very massive. Lanemasters balls are also very durable, from what I can tell, and they are actually pretty soft on the shore-D scale.

Anyway, from all (3) VBP balls I own I can confirm that they do not track out or catch nicks easily. Very durable and releiable stuff

I don't know about harder except for the Ogre urethane's cover is advertised as hard urethane and my driller did comment he thought his drill bits were getting dull when he drilled this ball for me. Visionary does tend to make their covers to last and I like that. I have an SS since it came out and it still looks great and still reacts like new.

I'm just now rolling on my first visionary ball (gladiator pearl) and it of course gets stuck in the ball return like my second time bowling with it.  It's got a small gash (maybe the size of a quarter) out of it, but really not too bad.  I've rolled on worse lol!  It still is carrying like a champ!    I dont really get a track line on it like my other balls though which makes me

Yeah from what Jason Wonders told me basically the Ogre Urethane reminds him alot of the old pink urethane hammer or blue pearl urethane hammer.  So it's definitely a very hard urethane, since those two balls are of course are very good spare balls and were for dry conditions back in the 80's and 90's.

wouldn't a non porous shell equal harder surface and vice versa? it would make sense to me,less oil absorbtion and more durable. I've also noticed thay are not as sensitive to surface adjustments and hold those adjustments a very long time.

with a little investigateing I''ve found that the current Visionary covers are listed as being harder then most other covers on the market includeing LaneMasters!.the older Vis covers are softer.works for me

Harder no about the same as other companies.  OU is yes harder 78-79 durometer.

Length = higher Rg.  Less filler hence higher Rg.  I am using another solid ball this year with less filler works as well as any Vis. piece as I've had.  Bowler matches up to lane condition and his/her technique and the ability to change their technique as lane conditions change.  Pretty simplistic.

Bowlers migrate to the types of equipment that match their styles and lane conditions bowled on...whether it's great equipment is up to them. I always love the mindset that it's mot me but the ball.....I say BS!

well it's not much of a difference between most manufactures but there is a difference in the numbers.
most Vis balls are listed in the 75-77 range
storm seems to run 73-75 for solids and 74-76 for pearls
lane masters list 73-74 for most

what I have found with visionary over most other balls I've used is that the visionary equipment is cleaner in the heads for the most part.what that means for me is I now can use stronger lay outs, cover preps and roll the ball instead of haveing to loft the first ten feet.it's also easier to go to lower grits on the surface vrs. high grit and polish and if you want skid/snap  a harder shell ball will have that in spades.

I really don't care who makes the ball as long as it works for me and I've used plenty of different stuff over the years.

Just an FYI as most drillers don't even have a durometer or have one that is reliable. But my driller has two and checks a lot of my stuff over the years.  About the same as most.  Cover stock maybe less porous that Jason would have to comment on about the science of the coverstock.

I've sold a Gladiator Solid, Ogre Pearl and NBPP the last few weeks and anyone (buyer) can comment on the amount of wear and track in any of the balls I shipped.  I bowl on synthetic lanes mainly and have a spinner and take care of my equipment.  Clean religiously after bowling at the center.  Use Clean & Dull every couple of weeks.  Those that take care of their equipment will see longevity...those that don't well you know.

To compare three non-Vis. balls an RG and an older Track and a older Legends that I have used quite a bit none of them shows anymore wear than the Vis. balls I have used.
