FIGJAM with the Blurple
« on: February 13, 2013, 10:55:07 PM »
I really didn't want to start a new topic, but I did :D. Anyway, I have been using VBP off and on for 8 years, and I just shot my 7th Honor score with VBP balls. Last game went to the Blurple and shot 2nd 300 in 4 weeks. Figjam off 8)

Congratulations on the great bowling.  I've always thought that if you could only choose one VBP ball, the blurple would be a leading contender.  These days, it might be a toss up between the blurple and the Classic.
Thanks and Yes the Blurple is a great ball, but IMO the whole Ogre line is. How do you like your Classic and how is it drilled? I have one ordered as well as a Warlock.

I'm still waiting on my Classic.  The comment was based on everything I've heard, seen and read from people who already have theirs.  I'm planning on going with a 60 x 4 x 30 drill with no (or an insignificantly small) weight hole.

It's been a week and a half or so.  At least, that's when my pro shop guy said he ordered it.

Sadly I haven't seen many guys throwing the Classic around this area.  For the number of years I've been throwing Visionary, Dallas has always seemed to be behind the bigger brands where guys are concerned.  It's the women who have seemed to be more open minded about trying the brand.

And even worse, when I did bowl TCBS here in Dallas and Fort Worth, I always had Visionary stuff with me to pass out before matches week after week....but when it came time for Jason and Willie to be here, the women seem to buy more than the men once again.

Couple women in my league throw the Classic.  While they don't turn the ball much, ball has a good roll on it and it doesn't seem to overreact.  Like the hit and carry and can imagine that ball with a little polish on the lanes.

Similar situation here in the Phoenix area.  Pro shops don't carry VBP normally and, although they can order them, would rather talk the customer into getting something they already have in stock.  Can't say I blame them from a business perspective, but it does make it tough for one of the smaller companies to get their foot in the door.  The few that have "stuck to their guns" and had them ordered have all been very happy that they did.

Yeah, I am the only one in my area that throws VBP, I have got a couple of people to get some, but once they go into the  Storm/Roto/Ebo/Track/C300/Hammer pro shop they get pressured and even ridiculed into the Big Boys Brands.

Yeah this is so true, my friend has a pro shop in the center that I bowl at and he is on staff with Ebo. He is a exclusive shop so he can only have Ebo Int on the wall. He is not a fan of the small companies and gives me a hard time when I get a VBP ball and bring it to him to drill, last night we are on the same team and my other friend said when I had 9 in a row with the Blurple that he was giving me hell saying he is going to shoot 300 with "blank blank" Visionary LOL. I laughed later when he told me, but it also made a little mad.

I see the same thing over here.  I think I would have said to your friend, "Not only shoot 300 with "blank blank" Visionary, but with a ball that's (fill in the blank) old.  Do you even own a ball that you've been able to use this long?"  Due to the difference in oil absorption rate, the answer is probably "No".  One of the things I've always liked about VBP is how long their covers last.  I've told many people that my ball will do what theirs will out of the box, but mine will still be doing it for a long, long time.

And I hear all too many stories of shops like this trying to charge even more to drill the ball because you are not buying from them....or make you think that the balls they are selling are better than the one you had an eye on to begin with that is not on the wall, etc.
Guess it all depends on who is feeding the pro shop owner if they aren't a staff bowler.  I know where I get stuff drilled, he is on staff and still sells other brands and has no problem with that.  He shouldn't.  If a person has an eye on something, if the right ball for the person, you don't do the person right by changing his/her mind.
Other thing, and this was covered many times before. TCBA people get good deals from VBP and yet many do not take advantage of those deals.  That's the saddest thing of it all.

So true!!  Had a New Breed Solid drilled for my son....and per Jason's prodding..."you don't need to clean the balls....hell...I never do", I had not even wiped my Glad Pearl down in quite some time....close to over a year.  Had shop clean it and shine it and he looked at me with Rock-like eyebrows at the amount of dirt on the ball.  Ball was still rolling like a champ before....and even better now that it's cleaned up and nice and shiny.  :D

Yeah good point, but he knows he can't get anything over on me, I know too much about equipment. Plus we grew up bowling Jr league together and have bowled a lot with and against each other over the years. He does mean well, but he very easily excitable.LOL

Yeah trying to charge more does happen, my friend and me have a agreement so my rates are the same. He is  good about not "strong arming" people on outside ball purchase for drilling. His shop is the gold or platinum or I could have the wrong terminology, but he will order anything you want and carries a few Roto/Storm in the back, but that is where they have to stay is in the back he can't have them in view. Part of that Ebo exclusive pro shop thing, again I could be para phrasing. All this said he will still push Ebo first.

The local shops here do pretty much the same thing, if you bring in a blank you can expect to pay a tad more since you did not purchase the ball from the driller.

That said I have no issues with it.

The bashing of "non name brand balls" gets a tad old.  But on my thurs league there is a guy who is all about storm, and would run his yap about terrible Visionary balls, until i put a 760 on him with the crossover and he shot 590 with his almighty storm.

Of course it was the lanes fault for his score dont you know....
