Ok, I promise this is the LAST time I'm going to ask this...

All things being the same, (drilling, inserts, and out of the box coverstocks...) would the G-3 and Blue Sparkle overlap? Wouldn't you be able to use the G-3 on lighter oil patterns or would it be better to use say the Centaur for lighter oil conditions. Ok, now I finished with it...please help.

Shout--Need a lil info.  What kind of pattern are you using these balls on?  What kind of trajectory?  I ask because I have some experience with Centaur and the other two.  Centaur definitely is a down and in kinda ball.

I'll give you more info. after I hear from you.

Hey Scott,

I'm not bowling yet, this is for future referance. I trying to figure out how to start my arsenal. I know that I'm going to get the Slate for extreme light oil and dry conditions and if they still have them, I plan to get the Burgandy Gryphon for my medium heavy to heavy oil. (Note: I was thinking about waiting on this new Centaur that they are bringing out, but I don't think it's what I need.)

My biggest issue was with lighter to medium oil conditions. I think I'm going to go with the G-3 as my medium oil/benchmark ball and get the Centaur as a light oil ball. I have average revs, so for me, it'd be better to use on lighter oil conditions. As long as I drill the G-3 as a strong controllable ball, I think I should be fine. Please be sure check my profile. Thanks for the reply too.

Shout--Hope I can help.

These are just my opinions based on my game and how I play lanes.  I am a medium speed 19 mph. initial velocity 15.5 at cameras and lil above average rev rate 325.  4 7/8 over and 1/2 up PAP.

Since. you are starting off fresh with no idea what kind of conditions you'll be bowling on...it's kind of hard to figure out which way you might want to go.  I'd purchase a ball that will give you a good read on the lane condition and more leeway.  Add from there after you know typically what you are going to bowl on.

To my way of thinking the G-3 isn't a good benchmark ball.  To me a benchmark ball should be in middle of line up with a readable cover and layout.  I think, I'd use the Violet or better yet a Char. Ex.  Solid covers are more easily readable.  Depending on what kind of drilling you put into a G-3 with it's pearlized cover I believe it could be more skid snap for you.  Depends on lane condition, your ball speed and axis tilt, etc.

The Centaur shines on a THS 10 to 10 wall.  I use mine on that type of conditon and knock 'em dead with it.  It's high Rg and low differential are great for that type of lane pattern.  I just get my feet in correct position and play the oil line with a lil more speed down and in...play the dry.  IMO..the Centaur is not a great choice for a low to med. rev stroker unless they can get their feet correct to allow for the right trajectory to the pocket.

Others may chime in to what their opinions are also.  The more info. you can give the more others will be able to help.

Shout,

If you are considering building yourself a Visionary Arsenal these are the 4 balls and layouts I recommend for your game:

1) Charcoal Executioner (med. heavy to heavy oil) - Pin=2-3, Top Weight=2-3, Layout= 3 3/8 control (extra hole in line with midline of your grip on the vertical axis, if you need one).

2) Gryphon G-3 (light-med. to med. heavy oil) - Pin=3+, Top Weight=2-3, Layout= 4-5 inch strong stack.

3) Centaur (light to med. oil) - Pin=2-3, Top Weight=2-2.5, Layout= 2.5-3.5 inch ARCH (pin position below ring finger).

4) Green or Slate Gargoyle (dry to light oil) - Pin=3+, Top Weight=2-3, Layout= 4.5-5.5 inch stack.

These are some options to talk to your proshop guy about.  They should know your game pretty well and can tell you if these would work best for you or maybe offer a slight variance of these to better suit your style.

The Burgundy Gryphon and Blue Sprakle have been discontinued and can only be found randomly through proshops.

Best of luck and keep us posted as to your decisions and results.

Yeah, I heard that a few times and it's not that I disagree with it, but what's keeping me on point about this, is that I have not heard anyone on these board say that it's an over/under ball. So I'm thinking if I give it a strong but controlled drilling, I can do some damage with it. Besides it can handle some carry down so that kind of helps too. Let me know what you think a good drill pattern my be too. Thanks again.

Hello all.  Thought I'd put my 2 cents in.  I just joined the test staff in Aug.  Anyways, I tried to put together a simple arsenal for myself.  Went with the Slate Gargoyle for dry, the G-3 and then the Burgandy for when the G-3 would not turn.  So far I've LOVED my G-3, basically all I throw.  Haven't had a need yet to even throw the Burgandy.  I have been probably to stubborn to pull out the Slate when I should, so I haven't throw that but a couple of times (although I did use a white scotchbrite to knock just a little polish off it).  Now if could just get my White Dot to get those damn 10 pins when the G-3 doesnt crush them all.

Shout--Depending on the lane pattern your bowling on and your game.  The G-3 can be somewhat over/under.  It really depends on those criteria. What works for one can't be said will work for you.  Too many are quick to give advice and really know nothing about you, your game and the conditions you bowl on.  JMO.

For the real low down and what may work for you....I believe you need to seek the advice of a "real" person a good pro shop operator or coach that knows you and your game.

First piece of knowledge is to know your PAP specs.

Advice and suggestions given on BR are a generalization.  I believe you need to sift and winnow.

Shout,

Like I mentioned above, your proshop guy will be able to make the necessary changes to these starter patterns for you and like scott said, they are generalizations.  These tend to be majority favorites in terms of layouts for these balls and the layouts I provide will be effective for your style with slight modifications.

As for the G-3 and the over/under factor, I've yet to come across that with a stacked control drill.  Not that this is not possible, because the coverstock is pearl reactive and with a stack drill can have a tendency to stand up a little early once it gets to the dry.

Best of luck,
