First Impression: Purple Ice Executioner
« on: December 21, 2003, 07:25:31 AM »
Urethane on steroids!!!

Specs: 16lbs pin out of 3-4", don't remember the top weight, and it's drilled with the pin 1" over and .5" to the right of the ring finger.  The CG is in the center of the palm in order to put the MB in strong position.

My goal here was to obtain an early rolling continuous strong moving reaction from the ball.  My sole purpose is to use this gem on tourny patterns, or sloppy THS.  On the lanes, which were wood second shift crown pattern, with alot of carrydown for some reason tonight, this ball worked well.

I started with my trusty Hercules and played 30 with my slide foot out to 10 as the break point and back.  The first game this worked well until more carrydown set in and a hold area developed.

After struggling the second game barely making it back to the pocket, I busted out the Purple Ice Executioner.  Standing on 33 with my slide foot using the same breakpoint the ball rolled about 25 feet down the lane before turning over.  The reaction shape out of the Purple Ice was one similar to my Hercules but even smoother and more controlled.  It started it's move about five feet sooner than the Hercules, and rolled completely down the lane without any flare on the backend.  There is no jumpiness here, no over reaction, and no quitting, it's completely smooth as a newborn's behind.

Positives:
Rolls absolutely true to it's design, the smoothest and earliest rolling ball I currently own and ever thrown.  Hit's like a mac truck strapped with plutonium, cracks the pins louder than most balls.  Doesn't leave anything near the pin deck, pushes it all to the rack or curtain.

Negatives:
Rolls so early it will roll out without head oil, and with too much carry down it won't turn over due to it's smooth and controlable read.  Definitely needs some dry to get it moving the other way.  Roll out places carry at risk because the cover is super aggressive.  Not for typical house walls because the ball will not work with the over under well.

So far so good, I will update later, PM me with questions or tips.

A_P_K this is what I found also.  I really couldn't find a lane condition even tourneys where I could use it very much and got rid of mine.  On very sloppy lanes My Midnight Scorcher worked better and had better even roll thru out the lane.  This is when I wanted to play up the boards.

I find that it will work well for me on the so called crown shot I have in one of my leagues.  A slight hold area develops outside of 10 where this ball can just roll through it.

It does seem very touchy and sensitive to almost everything a bowler can do to it, but I can't look past the way it rolls.  For now it will remain in my arsenal for tourny conditions with light OB, but if that can't cut it then I will have to take out the Midnight Scorcher, if I ever get it...

...And if it rolls better than this, it will actually be amazing...

I don't want to alter the cover because there's nothing in my bag or closet that can match this control.

I'm also currently working on the Charcoal Executioner, but the results are less than acceptable right now.

The Granite Gargoyle and the Purple Ice are as different as night and day.  My friend has his Granite drilled max leverage and it burnt out as soon as it hit the lanes.  He polished it in a spinner and brought it up to 600 grit.  It gets about six feet easy length more than before it starts the turn, it also turns over harder down the lane when it encounters dry or friction.

The Purple Ice is SUPER smooth, even, and controllable, rolls instantly on the lanes and doesn't stop rolling at all until it hits the pin curtain.  There's not much flare to this ball on the backends in out of box condition.  The ball rolls rather aggressively in a sweeping manner which reminds me of older urethane days.

It's possible to own both balls for different conditions and types of competetion as well.  I chose to go with Purple Ice for tournies and my friend has the Granite for THS.

Need more info PM me.

I should have brought this ball with me last night because open bowling had the oil everywhere except where it should have been.

I needed something that would roll early and continuous that wouldn't be jumpy on the backend.  My Char Ex wouldn't turn over and the Hercules gave me over under in the drier portion of the track area that worn out.

Needless to say so far this fits the bill under Visionary's desrciption as a control ball for messy conditions and it will definitely stay in my car for league and tourny alike.

My Purple Ice doesn't "flip" like many of the reviews state it did, but then again I don't want mine to.

A little update for those who are interested in this ball:

I used it for the first time on synthetics and it is a completely different ball altogether.

The oil pattern was 40 foot flat no buff to the pin deck, buffed out to the gutter, I don't know the units, but it wasn't as bad a wall as I've been seeing.

This ball is a monster coming out of the oil, the backend was ridiculous for a ball of this nature.  It would slide damn near 55 feet and then flip insanely to the left.

I started on this fresh shot with my slide foot on 31, using the ten board as my break point.  In the beginning I had unlimited area because this ball is just that damn strong.  Only one out of ten bowlers was playing my line so I had pretty fresh oil the whole night, but when carrydown set in things got tough.  It was still easy to get to the whole but after moving around to find the best line through the soup I left more ten pins than a little bit.

The Purple will pick up some in the mid lane, but it will leave the lane once it hits dry.  It's semi sensitive to carrydown but not that much, it's not forgiving at all with any mistakes you make period.  If you tug it inside you will leave splits, you push it outside you won't make it back to the pocket.

Obviously it wasn't the ball for the conditions or I wouldn't have left so many ten pins, but I was getting the best read with the Purple compared to the other equipment in my bag.

I can't give this ball a review yet because I haven't bowled on the proper mess required to use this ball, but none the less I still like what I see from it.  Hopefully I can use it one day soon.

Just wondering how you have the cover on the Purple X?
Bought mine used and the cover was shined pretty good.
Skated a little bit on carrydown but had no problem getting
to the pocket, left a few 10 pins though. Was wondering if I should take the cover down a little bit. Any thoughts?

The cover on my Purple Ice is out of box condition.

As my ball picks up oil the cover gets grittier from the particles, if you feel it is skatey some then take it down to 600 grit.

To me it appears that it's not very hindered by the carrydown once it sets in, but I too leave quite a few tens from coming behind the head pin ever so slightly.

I can't offer anything useful other than that because I did not have satisfactory results on this condition myself, and I'm still playing around with the ball to see where it fits best.

So far, it only works wonders when there has been a 10 board track burnt into the lanes and every other part is coated in oil.

I'd think raise your track to get the ball rolling sooner, maybe it won't come up behind the head pind as much.

I thought out of box was 600?

I getting read to order a crew of executioners
in feb, (2 char, 1 crim, 1 PI)  even with the PI
it is still looking like you need to keep the drillings
simple or else you run into problems.

More than likely I will drill mine label leverage like my first charcoal.

Yeah Eric out of box is 600, since he wanted to take it down and thought it was shiney, I would suggest the best place to start would be at 600.

My Purple Ice is drilled like your Charcoal is, label leverage I would say.  I have the MB ever so right of the thumb though because I'd like to use it on more oil.  It will definitely roll out on dry but it also offers great control on messy wet lanes.

It's a possibility that I rang all those ten pins because the ball burnt up making the turn to the pocket.  I'm not going to shine it however because I didn't buy it for THS.

I like the read and look the ball offers me, I just have to follow Visionary's orders and not use it on regular house shots.

Yeah, I have found that
whatever they say in the ball ad
is usually right on the money.

Seeing as I like the core of the executioner
I will have to compare the PI to the scorcher on
the soupy shot.

I just got my Scorcher back the other day, it is drilled with the MB on the VAL for early roll.  I figured since I'll be using it on the floods, I might as well put a good early rolling drill on it.  The pin is to the right and slightly under the ring with the CG kicked right about three inches from the grip.

In one thread, it was mentioned the roll of the Scorcher was earlier and more even overall compared to the PI.  That will be a sight to see considering the PI rolls at the ball return on wood lanes.

Yeah,

My schorcher is drilled Stacked leverage,
so it will be interesting to see to say the least.

Unfortunately I don't buy mine from Visionary, I manage to get mine slightly used from friends, or from web sites that offer slashed prices.

I ordered my PI and Blue Gryphon from www.bauerproshop.com when the site was working.

Okay, I have to admit it, when I read the above, I had to, just HAD TO, click on the link to see if it was working or not (it's not).  APK, why did you have to put that link in there?
