Frankie May
« on: July 07, 2008, 11:08:09 PM »
I was thinking of picking up a Frankie May. Have any of you tried to shine one up to play straighter with it and if so what was your reaction like? Or would I be better off picking up something else. I'm more of a tweener that throws about 17 - 18 mph. I would like to get something that I can go more down and in with.

Thanks...

Do you want a solid reactive cover?  Arc?  FMG fills that bill and React-A Tack is a great coverstock and adjustable.

Other balls to think about for going straighter depending on your technique and lane condition.  Solid Gladiator and Ogre Black and Purple Pearl.  Both relatively smooth and arcing type balls.  Ogre Particle when it comes out Britton has said it is a smooth reacting ball.  If you want to play a wet/dry house shot and want to play more the oil line or in the dry more suggest looking at the Blue Green Centaur.

Oil handiling ability heaviest to drier
FMG
Ogre Particle
Solid Gladiator
Ogre Black and Purple Pearl
Blue/Green Centaur

Thanks Scott...
I'm new to visionary products and I'm not sure what the different covers are for and can do. Just looking for some suggestions.

Actually the shot at the house I play is different each week, not sure why, but it is. We don't really have that bumper effect outside like some places. If you put your ball out to far it's not comming back. So I'm looking for something to play anywhere from 10 out to gutter with some backend reaction to it.

I took my FMG to 1500 polished and it handled a variety of medium conditions. Very smooth ball overall and easy to read it's reaction. I could almost walk away after the ball hit 30 feet knowing exactly how it was going to finish.

My take on lane conditions where you don't have that outside bumper room on ahouse shot for me would be to stay away from low differential equipment as they may not have enough motor to recover unless you are a high rev guy.  On lane conditions like this my Solid Ogre at 1000 ab would not recover at times or was iffy spotty.

I'd look at the FMG or Solid Gladiator as you surmized in your initial post.  Depending on drilling and your technique you'll get enough flare out of both.  I'd say the Solid Glad would be a bit more length and smoother off the spot than the FMG apples to apples.  But that may not be what you are looking for.

The FMG is a strong and great piece. I have mine at 2.000 Abralon, and it still is a ball for medium to medium-oily shots for me. Normally, too much for a THS unless the heads are fresh. The coverstock is pretty strong, and tunes easily. I found that my FMG showed good response to surface treatments - I had mine before at 1.500 grit wet sanded, and with the 2.00 surface it became much more angular. Haven't tried polish yet, since the ball does not need it in the role I use it, but I am sure that it would work well and make the ball suitable for medium shots. But not less, it is very powerful. Simple, but powerful.
