Gladiator impressions so far
« on: May 23, 2008, 05:23:10 AM »
Got a new Gladiator solid and have had a couple of games in now to see what my thoughts are of the ball.

When I thought about getting the ball, I really looked for it to replace my Cell.  I already have a Blue Centaur and adding the Gladiator will definitely take care of anything and above the Cell could deal with.

Ball is stack drilled with pin to the right (almost at 3pm to the ring) and CG directly below, 3 inch pin I believe.  Decided on this after meeting Jason and him seeing how I throw.

I don't think I've seen as much oil as I've thrown with as the Cell, so we'll see how it goes there.  Outside of that, I believe the Gladiator to be a much better ball from the mids through the backend.  I've been playing a 15 to 5-7 shot for the most part and the ball is making a strong comeback...to the point where Jason told me....it'll go and you'll sit there thinking it's not coming back....and it does.

I do find the ball burning up too much by the time we get into the second game and thus far, I haven't gotten used to the ball on the outside of the lanes.  As Jason knows, I'll throw it a little harder and tend to take hand out of the ball.

I'm hoping for some good results in the oil too!!  Ball is OOB finish too.  House is synthetics and not sure what they are oiling at right now.  And no...it's not a simple put it right and watch it come screaming back, funneled to the pocket.  Left a couple 2-8s between last night and Monday night, and left my hated 2-4-8-10 as well.

Thus far though.....very impressed!!

I think it pretty close to the Cell in total stength, they are both alot of midlane and backend with similar drills on them. The Cell can be fine tuned with the MB of course better imo, but the Cell is a huge success.

The Gladiator is great ball that hardly anyone but the crowd here will know about, MVP bowler is doing his best to turn shops out west on too the Visionary brand.

I was surprised of the strength of the Solid it is much more ball than i thought it would be, not unusable but strong.

If you like your cell and want something different that the mb factor is taken out of the equation than the Gladiator solid is your ball.

Two key points Barry!!  I am going to do my part to let people see the ball and what it's capable of.  Most of the people know my addition to Hammer stuff, especially the older Faball stuff.  Some were surprised when I showed up with nothing Hammer!!  LOL.  And you are right, there is very little Visionary stuff if my area.  Jim will be throwing some and one of our friends as well....so we'll see if we can get it moving!

You are correct though.  This is a very...and I mean very underrated ball.  People are going to be very surprised if they take that plunge and drill one up.

Update on the ball.

I am really getting more and more comfortable with this ball.  I've been throwing the ball well lately, so that helps the impressions.  I did have one off week, but I also attribute that to forcing myself to stay with the ball and to try different lines when I might go to another ball for a different reaction instead.

My overall impression is as I said before.....big midlane and big backend.  The ball really reminds me of the Vicious Reactive, but in all honesty, the ball reads a lot earlier than the Vicious.  It is as Barry said.....strong....but not unusable!!

I have been playing around with moving in more and cutting down the overall shape of the hook by taking a little hand out and putting a little more speed on the ball.  Reaction is actually better in my opinion as the ball really responds well and the drive is great.

Jason made a great recommendation in making sure I got this ball and I really can see why!!  Definitely matches up to my game and allows me to play around with different lines.  Will be working more on a down and in line as I get time.  I do expect good results with that too!!

Jim will usually drill everything that way.  He's found that to work best for him.  I'll drill things up differently, but if I want it to react early and strong, I've always found the pin to the right is my best drill.  Had them drilled under, but never liked that roll for some reason.

Our driller said one thing one time that stuck with me and that was that he did something with Norm Duke and Duke had the pin in almost the same position.  All he did was move the CG to different areas to get the desired roll.  So I've sort of maintained that belief for the most part.  But I don't have many with pin above bridge....maybe one or two.
