My 3 "New" Balls
« on: November 01, 2008, 01:01:43 PM »
Well VBP Gurus,

I FINALLY got my hands on 3 of VBPs older discontinued balls that I found brand new.

Ball #1 = Scorcher NPT
Ball #2 = Warlock DC
Ball #3 = Warlock DC Tour

I drilled up both Warlocks today.  But, have not had the opportunity to try them, yet.  I drilled the DC 5 3/4 pin to PAP, CG is 5 from PAP and no weight hole.  I drilled the DC Tour 5 1/2 pin to PAP with the CG 4 from PAP with the weight hole at position #2 on Mo Pinels dual angle layout.  It had 4 1/4 top weight, so it took a 29/32 hole 2 1/2 inches deep to get the weights at 3/4 side with 0 thumb/finger weight.  Since both ball were at 800 OOB, I took the DC to 2000 abralon no polish and left the DC Tour at box finish as I wanted enough difference between the two.  I look to try both of these balls in the near future and give a review on them.  I have not done anything as of yet with the Scorcher NPT.  But, once I get the chance, I will punch it up and give it a shot as well.  I look forward to finally giving these 3 a shot as I have always wanted to get my hands on them and finally was able to.

Every now and then, I go to ebay and type "visionary bowling 16" and see what comes up.  There is alot more I want but cash is kind of tight.  So, I ONLY went with the 3 for now.

Well, I got the chance to throw the Warlocks tonight.  I don't think that I used them on the right condition.  I was bowling tonight on a pair that tends to be my worst pair in the center as I get over/under like crazy.  Last week, on lanes 5-6, I shoot 791.  Go to my worst pair tonight, 3-4, shot 578.

When I pulled out the Warlock DC, I was forced to the inside part of the lane as there were 2 guys on the opposing team using sandblasted Resurgence and RotoGrip Epic.  I was swinging from around 18 out to 5-7 at the breakpoint.  On lane 3, the ball seemed to roll hard in the midlane, and due to its flare potential, made a continuous hard arc into the pocket.  When I used it on lane 4, the ball got outside and then seemed to labor a bit on the backend.  Even with the 5 3/4 pin to PAP, it looked as though it was dying a bit.  Best reaction I got was tripping the 2-4-5-8.  With that being said, I pulled out the DC Tour since there was ALOT of carrydown in the middle of the lane.  My first pitch went 20 out to 10 at the breakpoint and I leave a 1-2-6-10.  With either ball, if I moved right and played 15 at the arrows out to 7-8 at the breakpoint, ball was rolling too early and never had a shot staying right of the headpin.  If I got deeper in the lane, I think due to both balls being more "rolly", there was not alot of backend movement/recovery.

In summary, I need to try them on fresher conditions.  Where I think these balls will shine is when the patterns are fresh with alot of oil in the heads and midlane where I can play more up the track.  I may even play with the surfaces some more as I left the DC Tour box finish and the DC took up to 2000.  I really liked the reaction I got with the DC before over/under he-- came into play.

Rolly....that's the keyword here Steve.  I find the same thing with any Warlock core.  You do need head oil.  I found the same factors that you state.

To change the Warlock's ability to roll what I did was change my release to a drag type with with more axis rotation projecting ball out to the outside to the break point.  This helped store energy and took some of the mid-lane/rolly reaction.

I bet this is because these DC core balls flare like the Immortals. I think 10" was AVERAGE.

With the balls drilled for length, I am still getting about 6 inches of flare with my rev rate.  I threw the DC last night again and a good friend of mine on staff with Ebonite watched a few pitches down the lane and he told me he really like the roll on the ball because it was about a good 8 feet sooner than my Dry Heat (I have been using alot this year) and alot smoother off the spot.  FWIW, the Dry Heat and Warlock DC are drilled identical (pin 1 inch above the bridge and cg underneath the ring finger no weight hole).
