Ball Selection Help
« on: December 11, 2008, 11:38:36 AM »
Hey Guys,

Thought I would throw this out and ask for a little help.  I currently have in my "arsenal" a 16# B/G Centaur and a 16# Charcoal Executioner.  Both are lightly polished and cover 95% of the shots I encounter.

Over the summer I picked up a 16# Immortal Solid hoping it would fit a niche as a heavier oil ball.  Unfortunately, it hasn't' worked out the few times that I needed to use it.  It tends to go longer and have a strong backend snap but, does give me much more movement than the Charcoal.

What I am looking for is some advise on which ball to look toward now.  I rarely need to use this ball at the houses that I bowl at.  But, would like to have it just in case.  Secondly, since I don't use it very much I don't want to spend a lot on it either.

Would the old Burgundy Gryphon fit my needs or do I need to go to the old Granite Gargoyle.  I know the particle Centaur would work as well but, can't see ever being able to use one.

Finally, I know someone will ask so I will describe my style as best I can.  I throw around 15-16 mph with around 300 rpm.  I would call myself a tweener since I am not a down and inner but, also not a cranker.  I tend to stand around 25 and throw out to 8-10 with a mild arcing motion to the pocket.  I'm averaging 210+ with what I have now so I don't want to mess too much with it.

Thanks in advance for the advise.

Mark

Mark,

Since your game is a lot like mine.  Here's my take on the ball you mentioned. I'd look at Ogre Particle add slight amount of non-abrasive polish like Legends where you can adjust the amount of polish easier.

I like the Burgandy Gryphon myself and could use it as a ball above Char Ex.  For me I can only use a AMB Centaur Particle on a flood.  Some how I don't think you are looking for a flood ball if you are this is where I would go.

Right now on a THS my go to ball is the Solid Gladiator basically the same ball you are using in the Char. Ex.  Have to be honest I am using a non-Visionary ball above it.

I am with Scott on this, but not sure about the polish as it really depends on where and how often you will end up using it.

If you can, check out the following link:

If I remember correctly, there is a comparison of the Ogre Solid and Particle to give you a reference point.  Also, I think of the Ogre Particle as a stronger solid.....but able to handle a little more oil.

For the price......great ball!!

I agree with the Ogre Particle.
Go with that.  I had the SS and the particle.
It can handle quite a bit of oil.

Agreed Gary....depends on where/how Mark will be using this step up ball from his Char. Ex.  It's been my experience so far on Bruns. Anvilane which is a relatively slick surface that I needed to apply a small amount of Legends <non-abrasive> polish so as not to burn off to much energy.....my carry improved dramatically.  BUT, it's a small amount just a bit of shine.  If you put to much on you defeat the purpose of the ball.  On heavier head oil OOB 1000ab might just be the ticket.

Never had an Executioner, tbut the New breed is stronger than the Gladiator for sure. Its what I was hoping the Immortal solid would be.

Mark,

I have thrown many Visionary equipment, but not most of what you were looking for feedback on. I can comment on the Granite (as I have owned 2...one of which was my 1st VBP ball). The Granite Gargoyle can definately handle oil, but you MUST keep the cover well-mantained. I still throw this ball, though my flood ball is the only Visionary oil ball not mentioned yet...the Midnight Scorcher (also own 2 of these). I won't bother suggesting it though, as they aren't easy to come by. Anyway, I would definately suggest you look into the Ogre Particle, as it's a lower priced ball, yet will still be capable of handling the oil you speak of.

I agree with the right lay out on the Particle Ogre it moves a ton i am a pretty hefty cranker and my particle pin over moves a lot for me and the more you throw this ball it will literally get fuzzier as the night goes on great ball i have shot half a dozen 279's with this ball already and got it in august i love mine and very reasonable priced and wont be as hard to find as your burgundy gryphon or granite gargoyle... well good luck
