Help!!! is it worth it??
« on: March 03, 2005, 10:32:57 AM »
You guys are probably going to think i'm a moron for asking this but... I need a dry lane ball.  Walked into a trustworth proshop about a month ago and saw a used Slate Blue on a rack.  after talking with the pro shop guy (larry) he told me that the guy who used to use it usually gets rid of a ball after less than 20 games if he doesn't like it.  which was the case here.  he checked to see how much the guy wanted for it and found out he wanted 60 bucks for it.  after plugging it and redrilling it, it would cost me 82.50.  I'm not exactly well off when it comes to money otherwise i'd buy it and if it didn't work then o well.  ball looks to be in great condition.  So is this a good deal.  I kinda need an answer as soon as possible cause I have a tournament on Sunday at a house where the lanes usually dry out pretty quickly.  Any info would be appreciated.  by the way, when i say dry, I mean DRY.  especially dry heads.  Thanks in advance.

True, but it wouldn't work for what he describes as the lane conditions.

Power groove would never cover the same condition as a slate blue.

If the cover is in good condition and the drilling is ok, all you might need is to throw some grips in and plug and redrill the thumb for your span/pitches. Most people have similar finger pitches, and finger pitches are not as crucial as thumb pitches.

This is a good dry lane ball, but what is the weakest ball you have besides this if you get it? Just wondering how big a gap you might have...

unfortunately i can't just take out the grips and put new ones in because I don't use grips, still use finger tip but no grips.  another reason I was particularly interested in the slate blue is because i have never tried visionary and i really want too give them a shot.  I know its not really a fair test but still, at least its something.  as far as the weakest ball I have, thats a tough one.  it is definately my Columbia Wild, but the way its drilled it rolls up pretty early actually and is fairly controllable.  kinda funny because the lady who drilled it for me said that i would never like the ball, and that i would never be able to get it to carry.  well... 2 299s, 2 300s, and 3 800s later i can definately see how i'm never going to be able to get the ball to carry and how i should just throw it away now right? .  If you want drill specs on it just ask.  kinda funny the way it rolls.  my friend hates it.  As far as a gap between the 2 i'm really not too worried.  i usually can find a way to get my Wild to work on anything other than extremely dry to toast conditions.  like i said i really want to try visionary, if it weren't for that I would probably just grab my old Blue Pearl Hammer, resurface it, and then polish the piss out of it.

80 bucks drilled on an almost new piece is still a good deal... buying online and drilling would probably cost 110-120, and the blue slate will be just the ball that you need if the wild is too much but plastic won't carry.

very good ball. I bought one for my Dad for a spare ball and it has become his 1st ball out of the bag this winter when conditions are dryer (outside). Very good hit. And the price is good.
